The SS Great Britain is a historic wedding venue in Bristol Harbour.

On a sunny day you can have your celebrant-led wedding on deck. For a wet or winter's day there's lovely light room with an extra long aisle!

My celebrant career started in 2023 but it has been a year this week since I gave up my academic research and teaching job.

I absolutely love being a celebrant. I love meeting people and discovering their stories. I love the creativity of putting together the whole ceremony. I love writing the words.

As a celebrant I use skills gained from every job I've done. (There have been many!) So while I said goodbye to academia, I am still researching, still writing and still presenting. Just differently!

So today I am celebrating being a celebrant and career changes.

Get knotted with a gorgeous handfast! Handfasts can be made from ribbons, lace, cords, recycled fabric.

I can include a handfasting ceremony as part of your celebrant-led wedding ceremony.

There are many myths around the origin of handfasting ceremonies. The use of cords or ribbons or cloth to symbolically bind the wedding couple is part of wedding rituals from around the world. Some argue it has origins in pre-Christian betrothal ceremonies, and others say this is modern day myth!

The handfast creates a colourful ritual within any contemporary celebrant let wedding (or renewal of vows). I say some appropriate words while tying the handfast around your hands. You can hang the knotted handfast on the wall as a keepsake from your wedding.

Silence is powerful.

I was reminded of this power of silence at a workshop I attended at Divine Ceremony (funeral director in Bristol), where we revisited the elements that make up a funeral ceremony.

Using silence is something I practised as a facilitator in my research days. It gives space for people to think and then speak.

I still use silence when I am working with clients.

Silence is also powerful during the funeral ceremony.

It can help people reflect, absorb and relax.

You can have your whole ceremony silent.
