What does this bring to mind?
A cool summer breeze or everything that’s going to hit the fan when you dare to take a week off?

A lot can happen in 6 weeks & you can take the heat off in the moment by having the tricky conversations upfront!

Join me at 12:00 BST this Thursday for a quick fire Remote & Human workshop where we’ll get ourselves & our teams prepped with the conversations, rules & a few tools to keep us cool in the weeks ahead.

I’ll be sharing:
⭐ 3 conversations to have upfront
⭐ 10 rules for maxing out team time
⭐ Tools & tactics to keep things flowing

I promise you’ll feel better for voicing this stuff & it’s your passport to shutting your eyes on your sunbed rather than picking up your phone every 5 minutes.

Or maybe this summer is your chance to test out some new remote or hybrid ways of working!

This is for any digitally enabled business that’s navigating the summer madness.

Spaces are limited so comment with a big YES if you’d like me to DM you the link.

SPOILER ALERT:
1. You’re NOT alone
2. You CAN keep delivering
3. Flexible & remote convos help

Can’t wait to see you there!

Are your small issues creating big problems?

Here are the issues we keep hearing from remote & hybrid businesses!

Remote & Human workshops often highlight challenges that haven’t been openly discussed & addressed. Many with a huge impact on business culture & performance.

1. LACK OF HUMAN CONNECTION

Did you know that loneliness is as bad for you as smoking 15 ci******es a day? We all benefit from human connection.

🧡 Body language is missing within online chat & this can lead to problems in interpretation.
🧡 Video cameras on / off is always a polarised debate! Empathy always helps here.
🧡 Gatherings in person always help to build awareness & connection.

A healthy mix of comms styles & settings usually works best.

2. AMBIGUOUS AUTONOMY

Businesses are often frustrated with lack of autonomy. How can they better empower their people?

⭐ Flexible working permissions are often left open to interpretation.
⭐ Job specs, expectations & ops structures offer guardrails but these are often missing.
⭐ Autonomy assumes a basic level of mental & physical wellbeing that can be missing for some (especially among more vulnerable / junior / less represented team members).

Reduce the ambiguity. Freedom & ownership is possible with clear permissions, structures & support.

3. GREEN LIGHT CULTURE

Workers feel owned by the green light.
Managers don’t want the noise.
New recruits don’t like the precedent.

🟢 The pressure to appear always on. Where on means locked to one spot.
🟢 Justifying when you’re away from your desk, announcing when you return.
🟢 Feeling the guilt of choosing to work in a different setting. Even if it works better for you!

Teams benefit from scheduled co-work sessions, regular meetings & drop ins. Ignore the green dot & free up other time for the deep work!

So let’s talk *

I’ve learnt to carefully police my sticky dots.

You’ve pitched your idea in a workshop setting & now it’s voting time. The business has committed to taking forward the concept that’s most impactful x most actionable. And there are prizes to be won. Edible ones!

So I can understand the temptation to do what you can to win.

In past workshops with otherwise trustworthy colleagues I’ve seen it all:
🔴 dot shifting
🟡 dot stealing
🟢 dot flocking [the art of following others so you’re seen to be voting for the “right” solution]
& worst of all…
🔵 double dotting [basically using more than your allotted dots!]

Today I’m joining a team away day for a business that has gone from office based to fully remote & they now meet in person once a month or when needed.

I’ll be hosting a Remote & Human workshop that looks at how we can supercharge our WFH! Because there’s a lot we can do both as individuals & businesses to really make this time count.

We’ll be looking at:
↳ How we fuel our body & mind when WFH
↳ How we tackle self sabotage
↳ How we connect like a human when remote
↳ How we can optimise company comms for remote working

And the dots are ready. Bring on the pure gorgeous chaos!

Yes, we could use digital voting, but I like to make the most of human interaction when together in real life.

5 for each person, colour coded (obvs) to avoid the aforementioned dot pitfalls!

I can’t wait to hear the ideas.

Add a comment if you’d like to hear the chosen one 👀

You’re a hybrid business, so your team are doing great working from home, right?

You might think that home working is trickier when fully remote, but remote first companies are often more intentional with this stuff. Hybrid has been an evolution & the WFH bit is too often overlooked.

So hybrid businesses, listen up!

This week Remote & Human hosted a workshop with a group of product specialists in partnership with The Female Product Lead. With a mix of remote & hybrid workers, we explored the human challenges that we face when working on our own.

The top three challenges voiced were:
✴️ Connection with colleagues
✴️ Fuelling our body & mind
✴️ Self sabotage / inner voices

We explored what we can all do to tackle this. A few common themes stood out!

SAFETY
↳ Let’s not leave flexibility down to interpretation [“Is it really ok for me to be away from my laptop?”]. This makes it a confidence play & excludes those who are more vulnerable.
↳ To truly offer permission you need to openly vocalise it!
↳ If you’re a flexible business, be sure to set clear expectations & make these accessible for all.

NORMALISATION
↳ Normalise the human stuff, from screen free thinking time to the reality of juggling daily life.
↳ Leadership needs to lead from the front with this.
↳ With a celebration of flex, it’s less about clock watching or being chained to the desk & more about celebrating outcomes > outputs.

BOUNDARIES
↳ In theory we can all embrace the good stuff that we know makes us feel & perform better, but lots comes down to personal habits & business culture.
↳ From time-boxing, exercise & nutrition, let’s recognise our needs & set boundaries.
↳ Businesses can help [& win!] by allowing healthy habits to shape the ops model.

So here’s an invitation for all to remain curious & keep asking “how might we?”. Because the tricky human stuff is simply a user need that’s waiting to be solved!

Thanks to all who joined & also to The Female Product Lead for the invite! 🙌

What happens when WFH = Working ONLY From Home?

For some, WFH = Work From Anywhere.
Your kitchen, a cafe, a co-work, maybe somewhere abroad!
How very lovely.
But a bit smug for those who can’t? 🫣

For those working in sectors where data security or commercial sensitivity is a big priority, it can be a little more restrictive.

So what can you do to protect your sanity when WFH is entirely home based?

1. If public WiFi / cafe working / crowded spaces are a no go?
2. If you’re fully screen based. A lot of time on calls with cameras either fully on or off can be a bit much, right?
3. If you share your home with others & need space for confidential / sensitive discussions?

Businesses can help by:

↳ Regularly inviting open discussion about your home environment & understanding what you need to be at your best
↳ Exploring working patterns that allow you to block book screen free time
↳ Investing in kit that offers a little more freedom. Maybe a VPN, travel router or local SIM card could enable a workcation?

And it’s down to you to:

↳ Voice what you need & ask for support when you need it
↳ Prioritise human contact, movement & nutrition within breaks & screen free time
↳ Explore how you can set up a variety of secure work stations. This could be in various rooms, a co-work or around the globe!

Tell us! If your WFH time has to be spent at home, what’s the one thing you’d change?

Love or loath it, WFH represents a huge part of business culture & it’s just not given enough of the right attention.

Sure, it carries a whole lot of emotion either for or against it.

But maybe we could better direct that emotion into understanding the challenges & applying some user centred product thinking!

And who better to explore this with than a group of product specialists??

Remote & Human is seriously looking forward to hosting a Supercharge Your WFH workshop with The Female Product Lead next week. We’ll be asking:

1. How can we improve our wellbeing, connection & personal growth when we work from home?

2. How can we empower businesses to win with hybrid & remote?

Something needs to change if we want to protect flexible working, show the gains for business & make it available for more.

Who wants to join us in giving this some focus?

This is a FREE ONLINE session at 17:00 BST on Wednesday 23rd April.

Is your company winning with remote & hybrid working?

Try asking your team these 3 killer Qs!

Keep it anonymous.

Ask people to respond on a scale of 1-5, where:

1 = sadly never 😭
3 = sometimes 🫤
5 = always winning! 🔥

Add it up.

🔥 If you’re 12 or above you’re TOTALLY winning at this!

✨ Anything lower, there’s work to be done. We know it’s not easy but we think we can help.

We all need a bit of ebb & flow.

The times when we meet people, exchange ideas & discover new opportunities!

And the times when we focus down, minimise distractions & get sh*t done.

These cycles might be days, weeks or even months.

For some of us this could be the perfect excuse for a workcation! 😎

We caught up with on last week’s Remote & Human podcast to chat about nomad working.

Chris spoke about how we each have personal seasons. Sometimes we need to be super sociable & experiencing new things. At other times we need hunker down in monk mode!

🌱 What season are you in?
✨ Does your work environment work for you?
🎒 And could you explore a workcation within your role?

If you need some inspo, head to the link in comments for last week’s Remote & Human podcast!

Thanks again Chris! 🤩

“Sometimes I go all day without eating” *

This wasn’t us. But it has been in the past. And is anyone else all or nothing?

Last week on the Remote & Human podcast we spoke with dietician, Allison Tallman from to look at the challenges of fuelling ourselves properly when we WFH.

From her work with >100s of women, Allison explained that many people find it harder to eat consistently when working on their own. Partly because of pushing on through, not being in a typical schedule & not seeing co-workers eat. This means that many people skip meals or compensate by overeating mid pm.

But how can we be at our best if we’re not fully charged? And are we just kidding ourselves about productivity when we skip breaks?

Some of those on condensed hours will have limited time for lunch & often only make time for food when children return from school. And for many of us, our kid’s snack cupboard will be better stacked than our own because we know they’ll make more noise about it!

Good news is there’s no need to prep lots, but instead we can all win by planning ahead a little.

Please do have a listen to the pod if you have a chance. Search for Remote and Human on Spotify.

3 things we’re trying this week to improve the WFH diet:

✅ Adding more grown up snacks to the weekly shopping list!
😋 Eagerly awaiting a delivery from Dragons’ Den winners STOCKED, whose nutritious food blocks allow quick meals when you’re short on time.
☀️ Respecting the lunch break. It’s always easier when the sun’s shining, hey?

We’d love to hear what works for you!

* WFH confessions are actual comments that we’ve heard since setting up Remote & Human.

If this sounds like you, please be kind to your brilliant self, it’s ok to be human.

And please remember to check in on others - it’s not always easy! x
