May 2025 is National Walking Month, and here at Work Well West, we’re championing this fantastic opportunity for everyone to embrace the simple yet powerful benefits of walking. It’s more than just a way to get from A to B; it’s a pathway to improved health, a clearer mind, and a great way to stay active, which can be crucial for staying well and in work.

Why Walk Your Way to Wellness?

National Walking Month is an annual celebration that shines a spotlight on walking as a free, accessible, and enjoyable form of exercise. Regular walking can have a profound impact on your physical and mental health. Think about it:

Boost Your Physical Health: Just 30 minutes of brisk walking a day can make a real difference to your cardiovascular health, help manage weight, strengthen your bones and muscles, and reduce the risk of chronic conditions. Keeping active is a cornerstone of maintaining your ability to work and thrive.
Enhance Your Mental Wellbeing: Stepping outside for a walk can be a brilliant stress reliever. It offers a chance to clear your head, improve your mood, and even boost creativity. For those managing the pressures of work, a regular walk can be a vital tool for maintaining mental resilience.
Stay Connected, Stay Supported: Walking doesn’t have to be a solo activity. It’s a fantastic way to connect with others, combat feelings of isolation, and build a supportive network – all of which contribute to overall wellbeing and can help you stay engaged with your working life.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. The theme this year is around mental health and the community which reflects how important it is to be able to talk about your mental health with those around you.

By discussing our mental health we are all working towards removing the stigma around this and having continued conversations about it.

Are you struggling with your mental health and is this impacting your ability to work or find work?

At WorkWell West we are here to support you if you are struggling with your mental or physical health and struggling to stay in work, return to a job, or trying to find new employment.

If you are aged over 16, live in Bristol, North Somerset or South Gloucestershire and this applies to you, please get in touch with us and find out how we can help.

Great to meet local MP Karin Smyth, we met at the South Bristol Jobs Fair and she had this to say:

Thank you very much for joining us at the 2025 South Bristol Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair in Hengrove on Thursday. I was delighted that this year’s fair attracted so many jobseekers looking to have conversations about their future career. It was a real insight to hear from such a wide range of employers and support organisations about their work.

I was glad to hear about the success you have had in increasing your rolls since you set up in October of last year. Helping people who are at risk of falling out of work due to ill health is an important task and forms part of the Government’s work and health strategy. It is good to see the strategy in action on the ground in Bristol.

The Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair is one of the highlights of my year. Apprenticeships and employment have been key issues for me throughout my time in Parliament since 2015 and I very much appreciate your contribution to the success of this event.
