Have people heard of TRE (Trauma/Tension Release Exercises)?
It allows you to reconnect with the innate neurogenic tremor that mammals use to discharge the physical tension and stress hormones associated with the activation of the stress response.
It struck me deeply when I studied biology (I'm a Midwife), the incredible perfection and balance within the human body, the smaller you go, cellular organisation, for example, the more incredible and finely balanced it is.
When I learned about and started using TRE, it seemed so obvious, of course there must be a mechanism within the body to turn off the activated fight/flight response. The body is a complex interplay of opposing mechanisms that work synergistically to create balance. Why on earth would we have this incredible and powerful mechanism to ready us to protect ourselves and no way of turning it off when we no longer need it?
Yet if we look around the evidence that we have lost access to this natural mechanism is everywhere!
We are a society stuck in activation! States of self protection, fear, anxiety, irritation, frustration and for some rage.
This activation can begin to feel like who we are, irritated constantly, stressed and anxious, difficulties making decisions. There are a plethora of offerings to calm the nervous system but does activation just keep returning?
The tremor mechanism remembered by the body will continue to down regulate the nervous system impacting the way that you experience yourself and your body.
The benefits are often immediately obvious, even after a single session, but really this is a practice to integrate into your daily life, even if only for a few minutes for continued and deepening benefits.
