I have just completed this amazing training run by Louise Brown @ The Curiosity Spot. Over six weeks she shared everything she knows about neurodivergent wellbeing. Am thrilled that I have already started incorporating this into my private practice!

The dominant neurology is neurotypical, it is the foundation for many of societies systems and structures. It is often the standard which many of us are judged, or judge ourselves against (Brown, L., 2023).

Neurodivergence is not a disorder, it is a neurobiological difference and therefore doesn’t need to be fixed! However, living in a world which does not necessarily understand or accommodate autistic or ADHD (or other neurodivergence) people can cause a lot of distress and dysregulation. The aim is to empower neurodivergent individuals to understand what helps them (and what doesn’t), to find their voices to be able to advocate for themselves, and inform where necessary!

Self Reflection is so good for personal growth. Often people try to avoid it because it might bring up uncomfortable feelings. Perhaps just notice your feelings and don’t judge yourself too harshly. No one builds a sustainable self reflective practice if they’re being critical of themselves!

Before and after therapy is a good time to journal, and these prompts are so helpful!

I hope you’re all managing to keep well during the heatwave. 🥵 🌞 🏖

Did you know that if you’re on anti depressants, you can become dehydrated and overheat quicker because SSRIs can block the effects of a hormone that regulates levels of sodium and fluid in the body. It’s even more important to keep hydrated! 💦

A study in 2021 also confirmed a positive association between elevated ambient temperatures and/or heatwaves and adverse mental health outcomes. The heat can make our moods worse, anxiety and depression rise, violence (towards others or ourselves) can also be exacerbated in the heat. It can even affect our cognitive functioning and working memory.

If you feel like it’s getting too much - reach out for help…

Keeping hydrated by knowing how much water you need (this varies from person to person based on body size and activity level). Sip water often! Keep a water bottle handy, try and avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day. Wear a hat, sunscreen and light coloured clothing if you absolutely have to go out. Ice on wrists or the back of the neck help calm us down, and according to the Royal Navy plunging hands and wrists into icy cold water helps bring our temperature down!

During working hours if possible take more breaks…when on a break, phone or text a friend, sit in the shade or inside with a fan in a semi darkened room either reading, listening to a podcast or audiobook, or watching something light on TV during breaks to help distract temporarily.

Please don’t suffer in silence. Treat yourself with kindness if you are at a low ebb.

Can anyone relate? Sometimes parts of us are responsible for these self-invalidating responses. They think they’re helping us in some way. Perhaps what was adaptive in childhood is maladaptive now. Internal Family Systems Therapy can help. 🖼 @ crazyheadcomics.

If you’re interested in Internal Family Systems Therapy (or IFS), Dr Tori Olds’ Channel explains it perfectly, especially the underlying neurobiology.

IFS has been classified in the US as “evidence based” and has been rated “effective for improving general functioning and well-being.”

“In addition, it has been rated promising for each of: improving phobia, panic, and generalized anxiety disorders and symptoms; physical health conditions and symptoms; personal resilience/self-concept; and depression and depressive symptoms.”

There are several ongoing studies, however a full study is available here:
https://www.jrheum.org/content/jrheum/early/2013/08/10/jrheum.121465.full.pdf

I am pleased to be able to offer Internal Family Systems Therapy, having been trained to Level 1 by Internal Family Systems UK.

As a psychospiritual model, we can also view the Christian faith through this model too. Jenna Riemersma’s book “Altogether You” or Mary Steege “The Spirit Led Life” goes deeper into this.

Please see my website on how to book an initial session. www.sharonmilnecounselling.com

If you used a set of Matryoshka Dolls 🪆 to represent you, how many dolls (or parts of the set) do you think you keep hidden for fear of rejection, abandonment, judgement or shame? Naturally, we have boundaries which mean not everyone gets to have the same access to all of us, but if we are (consciously or unconsciously) cutting off, hiding or exiling thoughts, feelings, behaviours or beliefs from others, are we showing the real us, or a version of us we present to the world? Do we look “good” on the outside but inside is not so good?

Vulnerability does not mean hiding away our weaknesses, it means courageously caring for those parts of us that we feel are unacceptable and unlovable. We can love them and help them heal. If we can look within and care for those parts, instead of having to hide away, we can then be present in the world with an imperfect set of dolls, some may be cracked, crushed and repaired. Some are a work in progress. But they are all there, contained within but visible to all.
