"The nearer a man comes to a calm mind, the closer he is to strength." - Marcus Aurelius
Stress awareness month.
The link between stress and physical health is undeniable; chronic stress can significantly impact various bodily systems. Stress that's not managed can lead to many health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, digestive issues and weakened immunity.
Many patients that visit show signs of stress and I work to try and help them come up with strategies to help manage their stress.
Physical activity is great for helping manage it, along with relaxation, mindfulness, breath-work, sleep, good nutrition and talking with friends and family.
My 2 favourite homework tasks for patients are getting them to get out in nature and a yoga pose called viparita karani. A 20 minute break in a green space has been shown to help reduce stress hormones and calm the body and mind. I also encourage patients to do this yoga pose whilst focusing on some deep nasal breathing which helps calm the body and the nervous system.
Why not try it?!
