🫧 BUBBLES!! 🫧

All of my clients know I LOVE using bubbles in sessions, not just because they’re fun, but because they create so many communication and interaction opportunities!

šŸ’¬ Pause and Wait
Before blowing bubbles, pause and see how your child shows they’re ready. Did they:
• Ask for bubbles verbally or with AAC?
• Look up at you or point to a symbol?
• Tap their foot or clap their hands?
Every one of these is a valid way to initiate a request!

šŸš€ Ready… Steady… Go!
Build anticipation by pausing before ā€œgo!ā€ and watch how your child communicates excitement or readiness.

šŸ—£ļø Functional Vocabulary
Target everyday words like again, more, want, go!

🌈 Specific Vocabulary & Phrases
Expand to phrases like bubbles again, pop bubbles, more bubbles!

šŸ¤ Shared Attention & Engagement
Bubbles naturally draw joint focus, looking, smiling, and laughter.

What better way to learn language than having the best fun!! We’ve been having a lot of successful functional communication this week through bubble play and we love it!!! šŸ˜

🌟 My SLT career in a nutshell!

At 18, I walked out of school knowing one thing…I wanted to be a Speech & Language Therapist. What I didn’t know was just how many doors that decision would open.

Fast‑forward 19 years (15 years of SLT) and here’s what that journey has looked like:

• SLT degree → straight into PhD life
• Teaching SLT topics at universities across the UK and internationally
• Publishing research and presenting at conferences around the world
• Working in two Scottish health boards and progressing to Advanced Specialist SLT
• Working as a Research Fellow
• Moving to the USA to work as an SLP and adjunct lecturer
• Returning home to Scotland to build my own business and work independently
• Connecting with the most inspiring teams, clients, and families

It’s been anything but linear but that’s exactly what makes it mine. I’m proud of every opportunity and challenge I’ve taken on so far, and excited for whatever comes next ✨ I’ve got lots of ideas in the pipeline šŸ‘€

It’s speech-language-hearing month where we celebrate SLTs, Audiologists, and all of the clients we work with!!

Today, I have been reflecting on why I love my job and why I do what I do!

The answer is simple…because communication is a basic human right! And if I can support a child along their journey to effective communication, I have won!

šŸ¦• Dinosaur Quiz Time! šŸ¦–

Who can remember all the dinosaur names and can you turn them into 6 silly sentences?

Today we used our Colourful Semantics template (on slide 2) to build sentences with subject–verb agreement (orange + yellow = who + what doing).
The challenge:
Pick a dinosaur… choose an action… and create a sentence!! Post your answers below! ā¬‡ļø

✨ Silly Sentences ✨

Today we’ve been using AI‑generated animal pictures to spark the silliest sentences you can imagine. The more unexpected, the better.

Alongside the fun, we’ve been using Colourful Semantics to support sentence structure. Colourful Semantics links colours to key question words to help children build strong, well‑organised sentences and stories. We use colours to guide:
• Who
• What doing
• What
• Where
• When
• Why
• How
• Describing words

We start simple with who + what doing (subject + verb), then gradually expand each colour to grow longer, more detailed sentences. Today we were working on who + doing + what (subject + verb + object).

Scroll to see how we progressed through the task with two clients at various levels to also incorporate written sentences for supporting literacy development!

šŸ‘¶āœØ Baby Talk

Baby dolls are one of our favourite tools for early language development. They’re comforting, familiar, and open the door to rich communication and play!

🌟 Imaginary Play That Sparks Language
With baby dolls, children practise:
• Imitation: feeding, brushing, rocking
• Monologue play: narrating what baby is doing
• Shared attention: looking, pointing, engaging together
• Following the child’s lead: exploring their ideas and special interests

This pretend world becomes the perfect foundation for storytelling, e.g,, who baby is, what they’re doing, where they’re going, and what happens next.

šŸƒā€ā™‚ļø Action Words That Come Alive
Baby dolls help children learn verbs in a meaningful, hands‑on way:
wash • dry • brush • rock • sleep • walk • crawl • cry

Pairing language with movement helps new words stick.

šŸŽÆ Following Directions & Early Concepts
Baby play supports:
• 2+ key word directions: ā€œPut baby in bedā€, ā€œBrush baby’s big hairā€
• Multi‑step instructions: ā€œFirst wash baby, next dry babyā€
• Concepts: big/small, first/next, in/on/under

These skills strengthen everyday understanding and prepare children for later learning.

šŸ“– Storytelling With Baby Dolls
We build simple stories together:
• ā€œBaby is hungry. She wants a snack.ā€
• ā€œBaby fell down. She’s crying. Let’s help her.ā€
• ā€œBaby is going to the park. First she puts on her shoes.ā€

This supports sequencing, narrative skills, and early comprehension.

šŸ¼ Preparing for a New Baby at Home
Baby doll play can also gently prepare young children for a new sibling.
Through pretend routines like feeding, rocking, helping, waiting, children explore:
• What babies need
• How to be gentle
• How routines might change
• Their own feelings about becoming a big brother or sister

šŸ‘¶šŸ» Baby play feels nurturing, familiar, and emotionally safe, which is the perfect environment for language learning.

šŸ¦• Let’s Talk Dinosaurs!

At The Speech Hut, I love leaning into children’s passions, and dinosaurs are one of the best special interests for sparking rich, meaningful communication. When we follow a child’s lead, their confidence grows, their engagement deepens, and language skills begin to thrive. Dinosaurs can be used in a range of different ways to support communication.

šŸŒ‹ 1. Build a Dino Story World

Create a little scene using playdough, blocks, or loose parts. Then… let the magic unfold.
• Make symbolic noises (ROAR, stomp, munch)
• Narrate the action using verbs (ā€œHe’s climbingā€, ā€œShe’s hidingā€)
• Add descriptive language (big, spiky, fast, green)
• Let the dinosaurs ā€œtalkā€ to each other to model simple sentences

This kind of pretend play boosts vocabulary, storytelling, and early narrative skills.

šŸ—ŗļø 2. Dino Treasure Hunt for Concepts & Directions

Hide the dinosaurs around the room and turn it into a communication adventure.
• ā€œFind the dino under the chairā€
• ā€œPut the little dino next to the big oneā€
• ā€œFirst find the T‑rex, next put him in the caveā€

You’re supporting:
• Concept knowledge (in/on/under/behind, big/little, same/different)
• Following 1–2 step directions
• Spatial language and problem‑solving

šŸ—£ļø 3. Speech Sound Awareness With Dino Names

Dinosaur words are perfect for early phonological awareness.
• Clap out the syllables (tri‑ce‑ra‑tops!)
• Play ā€œI spyā€ using initial sounds
• Sort dinosaurs by how many beats their names have

This builds the foundations for speech clarity, reading, and spelling.

šŸ’› Why Dinosaurs Work

They’re motivating, imaginative, and full of opportunities for language. When we join a child in their special interest, they feel more connected and communication becomes more natural!

Here’s a photo of one of my client’s ā€œdinosaur pieā€ he created yesterday!!

🌈 Playdough in Speech Therapy

At The Speech Hut, playdough is one of our favourite therapy tools! This simple activity opens the door to so much language, learning, and sensory exploration.

✨ Why Playdough Works
Playdough naturally encourages:
• Hands‑on engagement
• Creativity and imagination
• Calm, regulated bodies
• Longer attention and shared interaction

šŸ—£ļø Speech & Language Skills We Build With Playdough

🧩 Vocabulary Growth
We explore:
• Colours
• Shapes
• Actions (roll, squash, cut, poke)
• Describing words (soft, sticky, stretchy)

šŸ“š Early Language Concepts
Playdough helps children understand:
• Size (big vs small)
• Location (in, on, under)
• Quantity (more, less)
• Sequencing (first roll, then cut)

šŸ’¬ Sentence Building & Grammar
We model and practise:
• ā€œI’m making aā€¦ā€
• ā€œCan you roll it?ā€
• ā€œLet’s make it biggerā€
• Pronouns, verbs, plurals, and more

šŸŽ Social Communication
Playdough invites:
• Turn‑taking
• Requesting
• Sharing ideas
• Joint attention
• Pretend play

🌟 Sensory Integration Benefits
Playdough offers a rich sensory experience that supports:
• Tactile exploration
• Hand strength and fine‑motor development
• Regulation through repetitive, calming movements
• Confidence for children who need gentle sensory exposure

When children feel regulated, they’re more ready to communicate.

As my client said this morningā€¦ā€I love playdough!ā€ šŸ’›šŸ©µšŸ’ššŸ©·ā¤ļøšŸ§”šŸ’œ
