🌞 Keeping Our Little Ones Safe in the Heat

Dear Parents & Carers,

With temperatures soaring, it’s so important to take extra care to keep our little ones safe and comfortable. Children — especially those under 2.5 years — are more vulnerable in hot weather as they’re not yet able to regulate their body temperature effectively.

Please make sure your children are:
• Well-hydrated with plenty of fluids throughout the day
• Wearing high-protection sunscreen (factor 50+)
• Kept out of direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day
• Dressed in light, breathable clothing

In our line of work, we sadly see children become dehydrated very quickly, which can lead to high fevers. In some cases, this can trigger febrile seizures, loss of consciousness, or even lead to serious complications like breathing difficulties or cardiac arrest.

🚨 What to do if your child develops a temperature:
• Start with a dose of paracetamol (Calpol) — this can be given every 4–6 hours as needed
• If their temperature doesn’t reduce within an hour, you can follow up with ibuprofen, which can be given up to 3 times in 24 hours
• Always give paracetamol first, and allow time to see if it’s effective before introducing the second medicine
