What Is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a compassionate, trauma-informed therapeutic approach that sees the mind as made up of different “parts,” each carrying its own emotions, beliefs, and roles. Rather than being a problem, these parts are understood as protective and adaptive responses to life experiences—especially early or overwhelming ones.
At the core of IFS is the Self: a calm, curious, confident inner presence capable of healing and leading the internal system.
IFS helps people to:
• Recognise and understand their protective parts (e.g., inner critics, perfectionists, planners, avoiders).
• Gently meet the wounded or burdened parts that carry pain, shame, or fear.
• Restore balance, allowing the Self to lead with clarity, compassion, and confidence.
It’s a deeply respectful model that supports healing from within—helping people feel more integrated, grounded, and whole.
