Functional seizures--may also be called non-epileptic seizures (NES), PNES, or dissociative seizures--fall under the FND umbrella. Functional seizures can be viewed as an expression of a sympathetically over-activated nervous system.

Dr. Afra Moenter, the founder of FNDcourage, views functional seizures as a “reset mechanism” preventing the prolonged overactivation of the nervous system, which could potentially lead to more damage.

Wanting to learn more about functional seizures? Check out our website at www.fndcourage.org under the "What is FND" tab.

We get questions about this from time to time: https://www.theottoolbox.com/what-is-polyvagal-theory/

“The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the body which originates in the brain as cranial nerve ten, travels down the from the neck and then passes around the digestive system, liver, spleen, pancreas, heart and lungs.

This nerve is a major player in the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the ‘rest and digest’ part (opposite to the sympathetic nervous system which is ‘fight of flight’).”
