Today is World Malaria Day, and this year's theme couldn't be more urgent: 'Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must.' π
The numbers are stark. In 2024 alone, there were an estimated 282 million malaria cases and 610,000 deaths worldwide. Africa bears 94% of that burden. And with drug-resistant strains spreading, the need for new therapies has never been greater.
But progress is possible β and clinical research is at the heart of it.
We're proud to have played our part. Working alongside Fortrea, we helped design and deliver a bespoke decentralised laboratory solution to support a Phase II clinical trial investigating a novel therapy for severe malaria. The trial spanned 17 sites across 11 countries β reaching over 200 patients in some of the most remote and resource-limited regions of Africa and India.
This wasn't straightforward. Central labs weren't an option. Infrastructure was limited. Cold chain logistics were complex. Connectivity was unreliable. So we built a solution from the ground up β integrating point-of-care testing devices from multiple manufacturers into a seamless protocol, enabling real-time data transmission back to the trial sponsor and ensuring sites had everything they needed to test patients safely and confidently.
Because getting life-saving research to the people who need it most sometimes means going where no one has gone before.
