Many people transition to the vegan diet for various reasons.The first vegan movement was motivated by the desire to preserve good health and avoid the tuberculosis epidemic found in cows.
Many vegans today decide to transition to the vegan diet for it's health benefits, to improve human rights and to protect the environment.
However, animals welfare is central to the movement. Many vegans not only cut animal food products out of their diet, but also any products which have been tested on animals, or made from animals.
