Turning Awareness into Real Workplace Action

What are you doing for this years Mental Health Awareness Week 11th-17th May 2026?

This year’s theme is, “Take Action,”. It is a timely reminder that awareness alone isn’t enough. In today’s fast-paced, high-pressure work environments, organisations must move beyond conversation and commit to meaningful, visible change.

Workplace mental health is no longer a “nice to have” — it’s fundamental to employee wellbeing, engagement, and performance. But real impact comes when businesses actively embed mental health into their culture, policies, and day-to-day practices.

A call to action - Mental Health Awareness Week is an opportunity to pause and ask:

➡️ What are you doing to support mental health at work?
➡️ Awareness starts the conversation — but action is what truly makes a difference.

📢 Why not start with a mental health workshop and develop from there - Only a couple of slots left!

Campaign Days: Game-Changer or Just More Noise?

I know may of you have mixed views about national campaign days, but I still think they have their place in enhancing our ongoing messages around mental health awareness ✅

11th-17th May is Mental Health Awareness Week and this years theme is 'Take Action'

We have had many years promoting:
➡️ Mental health awareness
➡️ Positive conversations
➡️ Increasing knowledge and mental health literacy

Which are all great, BUT What positive action can we take to move things forward in the workplace?

1. Create a culture of psychological safety ✅
2. Train managers to support, not just supervise ✅
3. Make wellbeing part of everyday work — not an add-on ✅
4. Encourage small, consistent actions ✅

Work with us at Promote Mental Health to develop the above actions in 2026

Why not start with a team workshop for Mental Health Awareness Week - Surviving and Thriving in the Workplace.

If you need to talk to someone today, or any other days of the year, here are a few places you can try.

It is ok to reach out for help, but it's also important to look out for those around you who might need your support to have a conversation.

Have a go at the following:

➡️ Asking twice - How are you doing? What's going on for you at the moment?
➡️ At the beginning of meetings or 1:1's - What did you do to relax last night? Is there anything anyone needs support with before we start this meeting?
➡️ In your lunch break - Fancy a walk and a chat or a change of sceanary?

Finding the time to talk on a regular basis at work, means we know our teams well, we can recognise changes in behaviour and conversations flow much easier when we check in on mental health and wellbeing.

What do you do in your workplace?

Find the with someone this week 🤗

Thursday 5th February is Time to Talk day.

Yes, I hear you say.... so what? .........another mental health awareness day.

Mental health does need to be thought about in the workplace every day of the year, but this weeks conversation could be:

✅ The start of a someone opening up and seeking help.

✅ Enhancing an already open culture around mental health in your workplace

✅ The chance for you to find help and support your need

What could you do this week:
Text a friend to ask how they're doing
Go for a walk and talk with a neighbour
Invite a colleague for a cup of tea and a chat
Deliver a school assembly on mental health
Host a lunch and learn session in your workplace
Share Mind's campaign graphic's on social media

Striding through January

Monday 19th January is traditionally known as Blue Monday. This is because it is the third week in January, it’s a long way since payday, the weather is often poor and it is a very challenging part of the year. Many believe this was designed by a psychologist who was sponsored by a holiday company to enhance sales! Whether we believe the hype, or not, it is a challenging time of year for us all.

Outside of work I am part of amazing running club, HI Runners. I am the Mental Health and Wellbeing lead for the club, and part of England Athletics Campaign.

This Monday we hosted a session, to bring members and new members together, to wearing something bright and chatting to a buddy. We had our usual running tempo group, a run and talk group and a walking group.

This club plays a huge part in supporting my mental health, and is like a second family. A massive than you to everyone who turned out this week.

Don’t compare your full iceberg with the tip of someone else’s. We are all dealing with a lot underneath.

Anti-burnout advent day 10: it’s never just you

We tend to beat ourselves up for feeling bad- thinking it makes us different and no one else feels this way. This just makes us feel worse and can even stop us sharing how we feel or accessing support.

However, feeling bad or struggling is a common and shared human experience. We all struggle at time and For many people there is a great amount going on that we just don’t see, and often couldn’t guess.

Yet, at Christmas time, the picture of perfection is thrown at us from all angles. It can appear that everyone is having a magical time, with their picture perfect families, making magic Christmas memories. This can be in stark contrast to what we feel underneath our surface.

But the reality is that many people find this season stressful. And the strain of this year means this is even more likely to be the case. So often the picture perfect image is just an illusion and there’s a lot going on underneath the surface that we just don’t share about ourselves or see in others. Life is complex. For any of us, It’s very rarely as simple or picture perfect as it may appear.

Two simple ideas to help:

1. Remember every time you make a comparison, you are comparing your full iceberg to just the tip of everyone else’s iceberg. That’s an unfair comparison.

2. If you’re beating yourself up for what’s underneath your surface, remember that we all have a submerged story, even if it feels like others don’t. We all feel bad and suffer at times.

There’s loads more anti-burnout ideas in my new book, available to pre-order now. https://geni.us/AntiBurnoutBook

25 years of Mental Health Promotion 🎉

This year will be the 25th year I have celebrated World Mental Health Day. Today I join the global conversation about mental health. It’s a day to raise awareness, drive positive change, and reflect on the progress we’ve made.

My work, and life, is to promote awareness of mental health daily.

My focus is the adult population in the workplace, where I aim to help organisations upskill their employees to look after themselves and others, and develop a positive workplace culture to help them thrive.

Over the next few years we need to see:
📢 Workplaces prioritising mental health and wellbeing as a top priority, not a tick box exercise or an add on.
📢 Better governmental support and finance for mental health services, so they are able to meet the needs of the population.
📢 Workplaces, communities and schools enhancing their knowledge around mental health so they are able to spot signs and symptoms in themselves and others, and know where to signpost people too.

I am asking you to take positive action TODAY around mental health

➡️ If you are a CEO, manage or team member - You have a huge opportunity to role-model positive behaviours around mental health, the chance to embed a positive workplace culture and the opportunity to upskill you workforce with knowledge and training.

➡️ If you have family and friends, find out more about mental health so you can look after your own wellbeing, and keep an eye out for family and friends when they may need additional support.

➡️ Keep an eye out for positive posts on social media today enhancing your knowledge, understanding and skills around mental health.

Surviving and Thriving in Marketing 📢

It was an absolute pleasure delivering a mental health workshop for Cambridge Network today for their marketing group. We looked at reflective exercises on stress and work life balance, and considered tools and techniques for embedding positive lifestyle behaviours.

A huge thank you to Sally Bain for organising, and to Lucy Atkin and EA First for hosting. What a stunning office space you have, so relaxing 😀.
