Just one more post about Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week 2026 💜

Even with all the progress we’ve made in raising awareness (which is amazing), the most common thing I hear from women is: “I wish I’d got help sooner.”

You tell yourself you’re just tired.
You assume this is what motherhood is supposed to feel like.
Of course your brain feels foggy.
Of course you’re overwhelmed.

Until later, when you realise you weren’t just tired or overwhelmed. You were struggling, and nobody had spotted it yet.

This is why I’ve shifted to more proactive and preventative support – if we’ve already built that relationship during pregnancy, and I’ve been there with you through your birth, it’s so much easier to spot those early signs and respond quickly before things reach crisis point.

I wanted to add my voice to this year’s Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week, celebrating and recognizing 10 years of hard work from the

Maternal mental health is literally everything that I'm about, everything I stand for. And we've come a long way in terms of general awareness of perinatal mental health problems, things like postnatal depression and postnatal anxiety. So we have the awareness, but then what?

Then you go and see a GP who still has outdated information about what medication is safe, or you don't meet the threshold for the perinatal team, so then you’re left with nothing or talking therapies (with probably a 6 month waiting list) if you're lucky.

This gap makes my heart ache, and is one of the reasons I care so deeply about the work I do.
I know there are no simple answers to this, but I’d love to hear your thoughts – let me know in the comments 🗨️

❤️
This mum had recently been diagnosed with ADHD and had spent a long time feeling ashamed and judged that she couldn't keep on top of household and parenting tasks.

My support embodied the message that she wasn’t stupid or lazy, but neurodivergent.
An unemptied dishwasher didn’t define her strengths as a mother.

If you’ve ever told yourself you’re lazy or failing… pause. That path only leads to shame and heaviness.
The right support, grounded in understanding, calm reliability, and simple routines, can feel empowering and help rewrite the story you tell yourself.

If you’re looking for that kind of support, you’re welcome to reach out.

✨ The UNGLAMOROUS List ✨

I'm not a cleaner, but as a mum and postnatal doula I know how heavy these simple tasks can feel, particularly when you're trapped under a baby.

Imagine me as your fairy godmother 😂, getting those jobs done, while you snuggle, rest, eat.

And that's just the practical stuff – wait till you find out what emotional support I can offer too 💜

Send me a message or book a call 📞 if this is something you NEED right now.

If you have ever worried whether you are stimulating your baby enough, this post is for you!

My top 5 essential baby items for brain development:

1. Arms - babies need to be held and want to be close to you. In your arms is their favourite place, being cuddled will help them feel calm and regulated. ❤️

2. Face - newborn babies can recognise the triangular pattern that your eyes and nose/ mouth make and even in those early weeks you may notice them copying your facial expressions such as opening their mouth when you do. 👶🏻

3. Pram (or a sling) - getting outside for some fresh air is amazing for both of you, your baby will experience new sensations on their skin, new things to look at and you will feel better for not being cooped up inside. A walk is great, but even being in the garden is good. 🌿

4. Window - you don't need a load of black and white books and images to stimulate your baby, they will be drawn to any contrasting image, such as light at the window against dark curtains. 🪟

5. Bed (cot, crib, moses basket) - babies need a LOT of sleep, up to 18 hours a day. And although most will need help to get this amount of sleep, it's so important for their little brains to switch off and process all the new things they've learned that day. 💤😴

The bottom line is you don't need to buy a load of toys and gadgets.
If you’re holding your baby, responding to them, getting outside when you can, and helping them sleep - you’re already supporting their brain beautifully.

🤰🏻 This time 16 years ago I found out I was pregnant, our first baby girl was born August 2010. I was so clueless!
I thought my midwife would guide me through the pregnancy and tell me everything I needed to know about giving birth, then quickly realised it would mostly be blood pressure checks and dipping my urine...

💙 Luckily I learned more for the second and third babies, and then returned from my final period of maternity leave into a new role as Perinatal Specialist Nurse in the NHS.
This is where I discovered my deep passion for supporting new parents, particularly those made even more vulnerable through mental health challenges, helping them navigate through the haze and find their feet again.
