I raised over £1000 for them whilst at school, and I have decided to do some more fundraising, with a little bit of a bigger target….! Over the next few years, I will be organising events and setting myself crazy challenges in order to raise this money, so keep an eye on this page to see what’s coming up! If you’d like to find out more about how awesome the World Land Trust are and the reasons why
I am supporting their incredible work then please see below:
Why the World Land Trust? The destruction of the Rainforest is an issue that affects all life on our planet. The World Land Trust is a conservation charity which buys and protects the world’s most biologically important and threatened habitats acre by acre. Since they were established 27 years ago, they have independently bought and protected over 600,000 acres of these habitats. They also work with local conservation partner organisations in these countries, helping ensure that 4 million acres of land is managed under active protection worldwide. Rainforests are the most biologically diverse land habitat, being home to over half of all the species of plants and wildlife on the planet. And so much hasn’t been explored, imagine all the important unknown information rainforests could hold- their ecology, medical plants, food and other products… its endless! They are home to thousands of distinct groups of indigenous people who rely on these forests for everything, however their rights to the land are not recognized by the governments of their country. They are also the lungs of the earth, releasing oxygen and absorbing approximately 15% of the CO2 in the atmosphere annually, countering the problems of climate change. Rainforests used to cover 14% of our earth’s surface, but within 50 years, half of this has been lost. And its continuing to be chopped down at an alarming rate…
Which brings me onto why I’m doing what I’m doing…
Raising £5000 will enable the World Land Trust to buy and protect 50 acres of Rainforest forever. 50 acres is the equivalent of Green Park in London (between St James Park and Buckingham Palace Gardens). So that means that 50 acres could protect 2500 trees, part of a beautiful river or waterfall, countless different species of plants, birds, reptiles and mammals and over 20 billion insects! (They’re all important :P)
