Cottenham FC men’s screening clinic - a success!

On Monday 11th November, we supported Cottenham United Colts CUFC in running a PSA testing clinic for 68 of their members and affiliates of other local clubs. Many of these men otherwise would not have been tested, as many were under 55.

We are partnered with Dr Asif Naseem who will review all results and advise patients on their next steps.

The recent diagnosis of 48-year-old cycling champion Chris Hoy is a poignant reminder of the importance of early prostate cancer detection. At such a young age, Chris’s journey underscores the need for greater awareness and improved early detection in prostate cancer, which can affect men earlier than many realise.

While PSA testing is the current NICE-recommended method for early detection, there is some controversy around its use, with varying guidelines for its use across different age groups. It has relatively low specificity and sensitivity for prostate cancer, with 1 in 7 men with prostate cancer having a "normal" PSA, while many other men have a raised PSA for other reasons. This lack of specificity and sensitivity for prostate cancer means PSA testing is not part of an official screening programme in the UK.

While PSA is undoubtedly a useful tool for detecting malignancies, monitoring treatment response and identifying biochemical recurrences, there ARE other tests with greater specificity and sensitivity for prostate cancer. For example, Proclarix combines multiple biomarkers alongside PSA, offering a more comprehensive view of prostate cancer risk demonstrating up to a 95% negative predictive value. It can be used where the PSA is between 2-10ng/ml, and with a specificity of over 80% for clinically significant prostate cancer, is a valuable tool in detecting cancers missed by PSA.

Had Chris had access to advanced testing like Proclarix earlier, it may have allowed for timely intervention.

Proclarix represents a significant advancement in prostate cancer management, helping to ensure that men receive the personalized care they deserve. Let’s come together to raise awareness about smarter testing options and the importance of early detection. Your health matters, and it’s never too early to take action.

Brilliant weekend at the Cambridge Country Show where we did blood testing for early cancer detection tests, hormone tests, and general health checks.

It was great to speak to so many people from the local community and raise awareness of the importance of testing early. We even had a mascot 🐕

It was also fantastic to make more men aware of CHAPS Charity - the men’s health charity run by retired consultant urological surgeon Chris Booth and his team. They will monitor your PSA levels so you don’t have to remember the details and make sure you are reminded to retest each year. They are also now providing our advanced prostate cancer test Proclairx.

Fantastic PSA and Proclarix testing event with CHAPS charity this week at the Freemasons group, based at the Provincial Grand Lodge of Cambridgeshire.

60 men had blood taken for a PSA test, and those with a PSA between 2-10ng/ml will automatically have a Proclarix test. Proclarix assesses a further 5 protein biomarkers and clinical data alongside Total and Free PSA in an algorithm, which gives a more accurate indication of the individual's risk of clinically significant prostate cancer. This enables men with a borderline PSA to be referred for an MRI if high risk, or safely advised to monitor normally if low risk.

All men had a briefing and Q&A session with Chris Booth, the clinical director of CHAPS and retired Consultant Urological Surgeon, to help them understand what the tests are and how they should be interpreted. The experienced team at Sirkka Health supported with phlebotomy.

👩‍⚕️ Bladder Cancer Surveillance From a Patient's Perspective - Urine Biomarker Test at Home 🏠

We are delighted to be partnered with Fight Bladder Cancer to provide information on Bladder EpiCheck, which is a novel urine test that can be done in the comfort of your own home and collected by a courier. The test is used instead of a cystoscopy in the surveillance of bladder cancer, or can be used in between cystoscopies for extra surveillance. We were pleased that ambassador and Director of Patient Engagement Melanie Costin tried out a kit as part of her surveillance journey. She has kindly shared her account of the process in the link below.

Bladder EpiCheck was developed by Nucleix Ltd and is available in the UK via Cambridge Clinical Laboratories. It is FDA-approved and part of European Association of Urology guidelines for bladder cancer surveillance.

It can also be used for early detection.

Thank you Melanie Costin for your detailed article - this will undoubtedly help other patients understand what is involved and how to access the test.

Embarking on a New Path Along my journey with bladder cancer, I have often hoped for a more comfortable and convenient alternative to a cystoscopy as a way of monitoring my condition, so when I had the opportunity to try a urinary biomarker test for myself, I was keen to give it a go. Did you know...
1. 1 in 8 men in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Black men are more at risk, with 1 in 4 Black men diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

2. By age 60, almost all men will have a lesion in the prostate. Around 3 in 100 men will die as a result of this lesion.

3. It is not "normal" to get up multiple times in the night for a wee. Increased frequency in urination and the feeling of incomplete bladder emptying is a sign of prostate cancer (as well as bladder cancer).

4. You are two and a half times more likely to get prostate cancer if your father or brother has had it, compared to a man who has no relatives with prostate cancer.

5. Your risk of getting prostate cancer is also higher if your mother or sister has had breast cancer or ovarian cancer.

6. PSA is the only blood test offered by the NHS (upon request), which can indicate prostate cancer. However, a raised PSA may also be due to prostatitis or benign prostate hyperplasia.

7. Between 30-50% of all aggressive cases of prostate cancer are missed by a PSA test.

8. 70-80% of Men with a raised PSA either do not have cancer or have Prostate Cancer that is not aggressive and does not require treatment.

9. If your PSA is between 2 and 10ng/ml, it is described as being in the "grey area". It may indicate a problem, but may not. Depending on your age, you may be referred for further investigation, but this is not guaranteed.

10. There are biomarker tests available which screen you for prostate cancer with much higher accuracy than PSA alone.
Proclarix and Stockholm3 are blood tests available via CCL which can rule out cancer with up to 95% accuracy.

PSA is the start, but not the end.

✔️Testing your PSA early allows you to monitor changes.
✔️Screening with a biomarker test can detect prostate cancer developing even if your PSA is normal.
✔️ Detecting prostate cancer early may mean it can be treated with newer minimally-invasive treatments, which have minimal side effects in comparison to treatment for advanced disease.

Did you know that there is a blood test which detects lung cancer between four and nine years earlier than standard clinical diagnosis?

EarlyCDT detects 7 circulating autoantibodies, which are generated by the body’s immune system as a defence against lung cancer at the earliest stages of the disease.

Lung cancer has the highest mortality rate and one of the worst five-year survival rates of all cancers. It is especially deadly because symptoms are non-specific and patients often only seek medical attention when tumours have exceeded a critical size, or when cancer cells have attacked the lymph nodes or have metastasized. However, if lung cancer is detected early before it causes symptoms, the chances for curative treatment to work are good - the average five-year survival rate for the earliest stage of the disease can be as high as 90%.

Order an at-home kit or book in to our clinic on 4th July in West Sussex.
