I've been quiet on here recently the reason is sadly my dad died last week on the 2nd October. Although he did live to the grand age of 90 so he would say he had a good innings. Although no matter what age it's a difficult time for his family getting used to his absence, including mum who had been his wife for 67 years and she's 91💕 RIP Dad 💙

Strange but true 🙏
Having a coffee and catchup at spoons with my friend Suzanne. Her mum has passed and I have fond memories of this wonderful lady. Strange but as we were chatting about her the hot drinks machine started up on its own 👀 I asked if it was Margaret could she do it again.. It happened a second time just as I went to get a drink..
I think perhaps Margaret wanted to join us for a cuppa.

Witchcraft or Mediumship 🔮
I read that Helen Duncan was the last known "Witch" to be imprisioned in the UK in the 20th century. It suggested that most Witches accused were infact innocent. Although that didn't save them from awful punishments or even death.

"Helen" as she liked to be known was born as Victoria Helen on the 25.11.1897. One of eight children in Callander Scotland.
As a child she was a bit of a tomboy with awful outbursts of emotions she earned herself the nickname "Hellish Nell". Her childhood was filled with her stories of strange events and hearing voices. However, her mother disapproved of it all. When Helen grew up she became a Nurse after suffering a bout of TB and spending time in a sanatorium. She felt she had the care and compassionate to help others. During nursing she met her husband Henry Duncan a World War veteran and they later married in 1919. Life was good until they sadly lost their third child Henrietta at only 13 months old from pneumonia. This devastated them both with Henry's health deteriorating causing a heart attack. He recovered but was unable to hold down a job and did eventually died. Helen was left to provide for her family so she turned to what she knew best her psychic abilities. She preformed seances and ran circles for family and friends. Each event would start with a prayer. During one session she had a connection with a Dr Williams from spirit who guided her on the best way to connect with the spirit world. He advised she use a cabinet with a curtain for the medium to sit in while channeling. Also to use a red light and trumpet to increase the spirits voice and produce physical manifestations. These items are still used in a physical circles today.
As Helen psychic events grew she came to the attention of the London Psychic Centre, home of the psychic union. They invited Helen to attend so they could run tests to assess her capabilities to determine if she was a psychic medium. Helen passed gaining a diploma as a newly certified medium. She was able to demonstrate her work around the country in many union Churches. Unfortunately, at one event a woman in the congregation called her a fraud. Helen was accused of hiding a ball of material under her clothes which in them days was taken seriously. The woman suggested Helen was going to swallow the large ball of material then regurgitate it during performances so it looked like ectoplasm, which Helen denied.

Helens was arrested and her trial was set for 3rd May 1933 in Edinburgh. She was found not guilty. Although she was fined £10 for swearing. The newspapers decided to change the verdict so it read guilty, adding how it was prison or pay a £10 fine. However. instead of it ruining Helen reputation it escalated her work, especially after World War two with so many losing loved ones.

Helen wasn't the only medium to produce ectoplasm (a supernatural viscous substance) that is supposed to spew out of a mediums nose or mouth to form a shape like figure or face while they were in trance. There were more mediums in the early 20th century too. However they were proved to be fake using cheesecloth material so the ectoplasm phenomenon ended. Although I'm not sure about Helen Duncan as this was some 100 years ago. Perhaps others may have tried to copy Helens ectoplasm for fame and fortune who knows. Also during Helen's sessions she was tied by her hands and legs so I'm not sure how, she could possibly eat then regurgitate large amounts of cheesecloth material with no hands. Tbh I'm not even sure it's possible to do without seriously damaging her health.

It was reported on one occasion that Helen had channelled a sailor through from Spirit during a seance event in Portsmouth in 1941 to speak to his mother who was present. He gave his mother detailed information about how he'd been killed during the sinking of the HMS Barom a British battleship which had been hit by three torpedos and exploded. This information was correct but it was also classified and top secret. When the Navy found out about this they called it espionage. Infact two Naval officers even attended one of Helen's psychic events with one participating but was this just to discredit the woman or was it genuinely to learn more. Helen apparently gave him information from his dead Aunt and sister in Spirit. He was disgusted and told her they weren't dead then reported her to the Police.
In January 1944 Helen was arrested and charged with vilating the vagrancy act which was a minor crime. They didn't believe Helen Duncan was anything more than a fraudster. However, later they changed it and charged her with a more serious crime of "fraudulent spiritual activity" under the witchcraft act 1735.

This act was designed to erratic witches in the16th and 17th century preventing witchcraft practices or even people consulting with them was a capital offence. Obviously many people took advantage of the act by reporting mostly women for their own gain. In total 4000 people were tried under this act and 2500 executed between 1653-1727 the majority where woman and most likely innocent.
In 1735 the new act was brought in to make it a crime to say you have magical powers or for anyone to practice witchcraft. So in 1944 when Helen claimed to have magic powers there was an outcry in Dundee and she was thrown in jail for 9 months. After Helen's sentence was read out it was reported she said "I have done anything. Oh God is there a God"
Some believe the change to a more serious act was orchestrated by the powers that be as she was considered a threat to the country. If she knew any top secret information then who would she disclose it too.
In 1945 she was released from prison as long as she never practised these seances again but of cause she carried on. She was rearrested in 1956. Helen died later that year on the 6th December 1956.
Helen Duncan was not the only woman to practice witchcraft or mediumship so did Jane York a 72 year old from London but unlike Helen was only given a £5 fine and ordered to be on good behaviour for three years, no prison sentence though. I wonder if this was perhaps because she wasn't seen as a threat to security.

In Helen Duncans defence with no disrespect I have read she like many other psychic mediums have brought peace to people while they are going through the grieving process to know their loved ones are ok.
In fact at least thirty plus of Helen's clients were happy to stand up for her at that time to testify it but they didn't want to know. There was no mental health 100 years ago neither to give the grieving the support needed.
Yes, we know there are fake psychic mediums out there that sadly give everyone a bad name. They charge extortionate fees too while they deceive people. They feed off information you've given them beforehand or theyve sought then deliver the same information back wrapped up as evidence. It's wrong but it happens.
That's why I always say don't feed any medium or psychic let them tell you but I see it online alot. However, there's also a lot of good psychic mediums too who may not have loads of followers on social media but for whatever reasons remain under the radar but are we really surprised, reading Helen's story.

Thankfully today Spiritualism is recognised as a religion too. It believes in life after death and the immortality of the soul.
Sadly I read that in 1997 a bronze bust of Helen Duncan was donated to her home town in Callander in Scotland but apparently there was strong religious opposition to it being displayed so it was put in a museum instead.

RIP Helen Duncan as sadly I think this world wasn't ready for you. You were an advanced psychic medium who followed early Spiritualism not witchcraft. You offered to demonstrate your abilities in court but they refused. A woman tried to undermine you but the court threw it out. You had been certified as a psychic at the London Psychic Centre too. Although you had alot of followers ready to stand up for you too whom you brought comfort too. Sadly instead of others trying to understand your psychic abilities and learn from you, they feared you then put you away to shut you up. 🙏🙏
