The Firm of 'Glen Barr' Opticians was originally founded in 1922 by James Glen Barr. He started a small optical practice in the town of Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway (www.visitmoffat.co.uk). The sight of the original pratice still remains, complete with its glass veranda, commisioned by James (or 'Glen' as he preferred to be known). In 1943 James Glen Barr moved the practice to Dumfries and settled finally in a premises located at 9 Irving Street. It remains there to this day.(www.glen-barr.co.uk)
In 1962 James retired and after completing his national service with the RAF, his son Alastair Glen Barr took over the mantle. He personally imported displays from Milan in Italy, was one of the first in Scotland to use Rodenstock sight testing equipment and, in the late 1960's, beome a Varilux lens supplier.

Eye examinations are free for everyone in Scotland 👓

It’s the best way to make sure their eyes are developing properly and to detect any problems early.
