We welcome today’s renewed focus on men’s health, especially the recognition that substance use plays a significant role in the rising number of young male deaths in the UK.
But there’s a crucial part of this discussion that continues to be overlooked:
Alcohol + Cocaine = Cocaethylene
A highly toxic substance that is created inside the body when these two drugs are used together.
Cocaethylene is:
• 18–25 times more toxic than cocaine alone
• Longer lasting, staying in the body for hours
• Strongly linked to impulsivity, mood crashes, and suicidal behaviour
This matters because too many young men have died after a night out involving alcohol and cocaine - including our own sons and daughter.
They weren’t long-term addicts. They were young men living their lives, doing what many of their peers see as normal. And they had no idea what alcohol + cocaine truly becomes.
At the Co-Alc Alliance, we exist because of these losses.
We are a group that should never have had to form, and we are determined to ensure no other family joins us.
We now need:
• National awareness campaigns that name cocaethylene
• Routine toxicology in all suspected suicides
• Joined-up prevention strategies across alcohol, drug and mental health services
• Clear, honest messaging for people and the night-time economy
Wes Streeting thank you for recognising the seriousness of rising male deaths.
We now urge you to ensure cocaethylene is part of the conversation. Awareness of this hidden danger is essential if we want to prevent further loss.

The strategy's announcement coincides with International Men's Day and Movember - the annual campaign encouraging people to grow a moustache and raise money for men's health initiatives.
