After suffering a traumatic birth and sustaining an OASI (obstetric anal spincter injury) it can be difficult to talk to your GP.

Primary care knowledge of birth injuries is a bit of a postcode lottery and we hear from many women who have struggled to get the help/referrals they need from their GP.

It can also be difficult to talk about embarrassing and sensitive issues in a 10-min GP appointment.

To help you make the most of your GP appointment we have created a downloadable symptom checker that you can print off from our website and take to your appointment.

This may help you describe what happened during your baby's birth, the injuries you sustained, and what type of physical and emotional symptoms you may be experiencing. You can also use this document as a prompt to ask for appropriate referrals - to perinatal pelvic health services, pelvic health physiotherapy, colorectal, urogynaecology, birth debriefs and mental health services.

Our website GP page can be found here: https://masic.org.uk/getting-help/gp-support/

Proud CEO Moment
I am so proud to announce that Mothers Matter is a finalist in the mental health & wellbeing awards 2025 for Best Mental Health Support Service.

But here’s the truth as far as I’m concerned, Team MM are winners every single day.
❤️Winners at making a difference in people’s darkest times.
💛Winners at saving lives when someone is moments away from giving up.
💚Winners at listening without judgment and being fully present.
🩵Winners at keeping people safe, no matter what.

As the CEO, I already know I have the best team in Wales for perinatal mental health. They show up with compassion, strength, and a staggering amount of commitment to catching people before they fall and for that, I am the luckiest “winner” of them all.

No award could ever measure the true impact they have. But this recognition reminds me of what I already know my team are heroes every single day.
