A female patient presented to the clinic today with an acute ankle sprain after stumbling on a branch while out running with her dog.

The management of ankle sprains depends on the severity of the sprain. For this patient we have started treatment with ultra sound, ktape and home advice on cryotherapy and stage 1 rehab protocols. We will cover acute injury exercises in another video.

Recommended treatments for an acute sprain are cryotherapy(ice), functional support (k tape), early ambulation(gentle movement), short term NSAIDs (anti inflammatory pain killers), rehabilitation and manual therapy.

Chiropractic care can help with all of the above!

kinesiology taping show in this video can provide functional support, helping to stabilise the ankle, improve proprioception and encourage circulation. K tape also creates mild compression and aids the reduction of swelling.

Advice is also given regarding icing and early mobilisation exercises which we will show in another video.

Studies show early functional treatment, including manual therapy and gentle exercises to be the superior treatment option when compared to immobilisation.

Benefits of early intervention can include reductions in joint stiffness, reduction of pain, increased range of motion, earlier return to exercise and reduction of chronic instability.

More severe ankle sprains may require further medical intervention, therefore, it is important to get injuries assessed.

We have clinics in both cardiff and Newport if you need our help!

Meet our newest Massage a therapist, Marie!

Every Monday and Saturday at our cardiff clinic.

Marie is originally from the Czech Republic. She came to England in 2010 to challenge her language skills. After a few years, she met her partner for life and decided to move back to his roots in Wales. Thanks to the beauty of the local nature and her adventurous character, didn't take long to settle in.

Marie discovered her ability to feel the tension and knots in muscles when, as a little child, she was asked by her father to walk over his sore back. With the satisfaction and excitement from every knot melted under her hands, this soon became a passion. At the age of 18, she has been gifted by her parents funding for her first massage course. Since then Marie hasn't stopped developing her skills through practice and further education. In 2016 she earned ITEC Level 3 in massage and in 2019 enhanced her scope of a kinesio-taping certificate. She is currently studying Sport conditioning, rehabilitation and massage at Cardiff Metropolitan University to deepen her knowledge of the musculoskeletal system with an emphasis on rehabilitation.

Marie's recharge time is fulfilled by outdoor activities, cycling, running, gardening, reading and so far successful DIY attempts around the house.

Dry needling is a safe technique for treating many musculoskeletal conditions, including shoulder pain, rotator cuff pain, biceps tendinitis, iliotibial band syndrome, Achilles tendinitis, low back pain, tennis elbow, whiplash or neck pain, headaches, muscle strains, hip pain and temporomandibular pain, also called TMJ.

During a dry needling treatment, one or more thin, monofilament needles are inserted into a muscle trigger point. A trigger point is a local band of tight, irritable and dysfunctional muscle tissue. This often emerges because of injury, overuse or poor movement patterns.

When dry needling is applied to an affected muscle or trigger point, it can decrease muscle tightness, increase blood flow and reduce pain. Patients often report immediate relief after treatment.

If you think dry needling could help you give us a call!

TEXT NECK?
Text Neck usually results from excessive strain on the neck from looking down at objects (like mobile phones!), which can lead to headaches, neck pain, shoulder & arm pain, breathing compromise.
An average cervical spine angle in flexion when texting is 37 to 47 degrees.
A study has shown that head weight increases to 18.14 kg at 30 degrees and 22.23 kg at 45 degrees, and can lead to inflammation of the ligaments, muscles, and nerves in the neck.
As always, PREVENTION is key - here are some recommendations:
1. Avoid excessive cell phone usage and take frequent breaks
2. Avoid prolonged static postures
3. Bring your cellphone closer to eye level to prevent excessive neck flexion
Save this so you can try these exercises later + tag a friend who might be dealing with this! Comment below if you found this helpful! 👇

Tyler has come into the clinic suffering with shoulder impingement. Shoulder impingement syndrome is where the tendons at the front of the shoulder become ‘impinged’ or pinched causing inflammation and pain . Treatment here is focusing on cross friction and ultrasound of the tendons to promote healing, massage to help the rotator cuff muscles relax, a mid back adjustment to help with thoracic spine movement and mobilisations to improve her GH (shoulder ) joint function. Tyler has also been give advice on using ice to reduce inflammation and a home rehab programme to ensure a speedy and lasting recovery. If you have shoulder pain give us a call to see if we can help.
