How Occupational Therapy Can Support Children and Young People with Anxiety

🌿 Empowering participation, building confidence, and creating calm from the inside out.

At Seirrah Therapies, we are skilled in working with children, adolescents, and young people who experience anxiety, whether they have a formal diagnosis or not.

Anxiety can present in many ways: phobias, generalised worry, social anxiety, separation difficulties, and it doesn’t always look like fear. It might look like irritability, poor sleep, tummy aches, or a sudden refusal to attend school. For some children, anxiety shows up as fidgeting, withdrawal, perfectionism, or emotional outbursts.

🧠 This is where OT can help.

We look beyond behaviour to understand what’s really going on. We assess how anxiety is affecting your child’s everyday life, at home, in school, with friends, and we use practical, evidence-informed strategies to help reduce overwhelm and increase participation.

Our therapy can support your child to:
✔ Develop daily routines that feel safe and predictable
✔ Build confidence in transitions (such as starting a new school)
✔ Learn calming strategies to regulate big feelings
✔ Re-engage with activities they enjoy
✔ Break down tasks to reduce cognitive load and anxiety
✔ Understand what anxiety feels like in their body and how to respond
✔ Strengthen self-esteem through achievable goals and meaningful occupations

We work closely with families, schools, and other professionals to ensure consistent support across settings, and most importantly, we meet each young person where they’re at.

If you’re concerned about your child’s anxiety or feel they need support to manage day-to-day challenges, we are here to help. We offer assessments and intervention across homes, schools, and community settings.

Thank you to The Depression Project.

Take a moment to offer a listening ear to a friend - they may need it more than ever and it may not always be noticeable.

Are you a professional working with Children and Young People (CYP) but need a space to provide assessment and therapy? We have our Therapy Space at the Seirrah Therapies clinic based at Walnut Tree Farm Park.

This room is available to hire as a one off or for a regular slot. We offer bookings on either full or half day basis. The room is ideal for a Speech and Language Therapist or Educational Psychologist, but good for others too.

The room has a cupboard full of resources and toys. We have a small kitchen, toilet facilities, messy play area, and parent waiting area available to you when you book, and plenty of free parking.

🚗💨 Vroom vroom… wait, what?

We just got a voicemail cancelling a Super Car Racing Experience booked for tomorrow.

We’re flattered someone thought we were in the fast lane, but here at Seirrah Therapies, we’re more about sensory circuits than racing circuits 🧠💪

Unless your little one needs help with motor planning… not motor racing!

🏁 No supercars here, just super kids, super therapists, and some seriously super fine motor goals.

It really frustrates me seeing children and parents being blamed when kids can't attend school due to unsuitable environments.

This isn't about blaming teachers either. It's a systemic problem that requires a total overhaul of our compliance-based education system instead of attributing the issue to individuals.

When children (who are usually neurodivergent) can't cope anymore, the problem is centred in them or their parents. They're treated as if they need "more resilience", or parents need to be "tougher". It's so much easier for the system to do that rather than recognise that it's the environment that is inducing anxiety, trauma and burnout.

I'm looking forward to Pete Wharmby, Autistic Author's next book which is focusing on this issue. Systemic change is needed.

Image description:

The phrases "school refusal" and "emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA)" are crossed out and replaced with the words "school-induced anxiety, trauma and burnout".

Let’s stop blaming children and parents, and start recognising the problems caused by unsuitable environments.

92.1% of children experiencing school-induced anxiety are neurodivergent (Connolly et al., 2023).

Not long now until we hold another in-person workshop in South Wales, this time we're presenting a 2-hour workshop on SENSORY PROCESSING.

This is perfect for parents, teachers, support workers, TAs and anyone who works with chlidren and young people with ALN.

Jo Harries from Seirrah Therapies will be presenting the workshop at Cynon Linc, and our team will be on hand with any queries about how to get funded provision in your IDP.
