Trauma can affect us in similar ways but it can also feel unique to us as individuals, even if you have been through the same type of trauma. Over the past 15 years I have worked with a lot of trauma survivors, adults and children. I also have my own personal experience of trauma and PTSD. Which has given me more of an understanding of how it actually feels and how it can affect you daily.
I will never make assumptions and will ask questions to understand your experience. What I have learnt is that what can trigger you may not be obvious to others. For example, if you were in an accident and there were helicopters there that day. Hearing a helicopter can take you back to that day and your body can go into survival mode, as it thinks it is unsafe. Understanding what triggers you and where it comes from can help.
Through our sessions we can process what happened, if you want to and only when you’re ready. We can also focus on how it is affecting you in the here and now. You can learn how to manage your triggers and be able to reassure yourself in those moments that you are safe now.
