5 points to seek help with psychological difficulties:

The first is when you have thoughts, emotions or behaviours that are out of control, especially when they are affecting your relationships, your work or your sense of well-being. Never feel embarrassed to ask for help at times when you are upset or depressed.

Next is when you are struggling to deal with life’s painful challenges – such as a major illness, the loss of a loved one, divorce or job problems.

A third is if you have experienced other adverse life events, traumas or abuse - experiences that have left you feeling in danger or less secure than you previously felt.

A forth may be when the use of alcohol or drugs interferes with your health, your emotions, your relationships, your job or your ability to fulfil your daily responsibilities.

Another is when you are confused, fraught with emotions and need the perspectives of a caring yet unbiased person to help sort among difficult choices.

Psychiatry & Psychology: Several queries recently have requested information on the difference between psychiatry and clinical psychology so I thought it might be helpful to give a bit of clarification.

Psychiatry is the medical discipline that deals with mental health conditions, Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in the diagnose of mental illness and they advise and prescribe medication, they occasionally provide psychotherapy following additional training.

Clinical Psychology is the study of psychological distress, this includes mental health conditions but extends to any emotions, behaviours or any thoughts or beliefs that cause distress. The training in clinical psychology is a doctorate and is of a similar length to becoming a medical doctor but it is not focused on medicine and does not qualify psychologists to prescribe medication. Clinical Psychologists are qualified and have experience in providing psychotherapy and psychological therapies, though some may focus on academic work, training or developing health services.
