Back Care Awareness Week 2025 is here!

This year we’re focusing on the Stand:Stretch:Stride rule.

Many of us spend hours sitting at a desk or standing at work, which can lead to muscle weakness, joint stiffness, and back pain.

Sedentary lifestyles = major risk factor for conditions like osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.

But, the good news is that regular movement can reverse these risks.

A simple way to protect your back? The BCA’s Stand: Stretch: Stride rule.

Here’s what it means:

1️⃣Stand
Break up long periods of sitting. Stand regularly to keep your muscles engaged and your spine happy.

2️⃣Stretch
Release tension with regular stretches. Loosen tight muscles and improve joint mobility.

3️⃣Stride
Build walking and movement into your day. Short walks keep circulation flowing and energy up.

📣 Share this with colleagues or friends who could use a spine-friendly workday!

From years of university-level training to delivering regulated, evidence-informed care, chiropractors are MSK (musculoskeletal) specialists dedicated to improving movement, mobility, and overall health across the UK.

Chiropractic is a highly regulated healthcare profession, with extensive research supporting its safety and effectiveness. In the UK, chiropractors are legally regulated and must follow strict codes of practice - just like doctors and dentists. This regulation ensures consistency in education, high standards of training, and protection for patients using this protected title.

BCA chiropractors go beyond hands-on care. They integrate cognitive and lifestyle-based interventions, offering personalised advice on work, exercise, and daily habits to support long-term recovery. They also use functional rehabilitation and spinal stabilisation programmes to address persistent problems and reduce the risk of recurrence.

To become a chiropractor in the UK, students complete a four-year full-time Master’s Degree at one of the accredited universities in the country. BCA members take this commitment a step further, completing post-registration training with the Royal College of Chiropractors.

Chiropractic training covers a comprehensive range of medical knowledge and clinical skills, including:

◾Anatomy and physiology

◾Orthopaedics and neurology

◾Diagnostic imaging (X-ray and MRI)

◾Nutrition and histopathology

◾Rehabilitation

◾Care of older patients and paediatrics

◾General diagnosis (e.g. blood pressure, cardiac and respiratory exams, abdominal assessment)

This breadth of training allows chiropractors to take a whole-person approach and tailor care to each individual. There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment; every care plan is guided by the patient’s needs, preferences, and expectations.

As most chiropractic care is delivered in private practice, patient choice is paramount, and clinicians can utilise a full range of tools and techniques, without the limitations often found in other care settings -when clinically appropriate.

Considering chiropractic care, but not sure what to expect?

Whether it’s your first visit or you’re coming back after some time, we know new experiences can come with questions. That’s why we’ve put together a clear, step-by-step guide to help you feel informed, confident, and ready.

From consultation to personalised care plans — here’s what happens when you visit a chiropractor.

1. Health History & Consultation
Your chiropractor will begin by discussing your medical history, lifestyle, and symptoms. They’ll ask about previous injuries, daily activities, and any treatments you’ve tried.

This helps them understand the possible causes of your discomfort and determine whether chiropractic care is right for you.

2. Physical Examination
A thorough physical exam follows, assessing:

- Posture and spinal alignment
- Range of motion and flexibility
- Muscle strength and imbalances
- Reflexes and neurological function

3. Further tests (if needed)
If necessary, your chiropractor may recommend imaging tests, such as X-rays, to get a clearer picture of your spinal health.

These tests help rule out underlying conditions that may require a different approach to treatment.

4. Discussion of Findings & Care Plan
Once the assessment is complete, your chiropractor will explain their findings and recommend a tailored treatment plan. This may include:
- Chiropractic adjustments
- Soft tissue therapy
- Postural advice
- Stretching and strengthening exercises

They’ll also discuss how many sessions may be needed and answer any questions you have.

5. First Treatment
In many cases, the first treatment session takes place that same day.
The most common technique used is spinal manipulation (also called an adjustment), where the chiropractor applies controlled pressure to specific joints to restore movement and relieve tension.

6. Self-care and Next Steps
Your chiropractor may provide lifestyle recommendations, exercises, or ergonomic advice to support your recovery. They’ll also schedule follow-up visits to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments to your care plan.

If you’re curious about chiropractic care, speak to a registered chiropractor and discover how it could support your movement, mobility, and well-being.
