What Happens to your body when you put on weight?

Did you know there are grave consequences to your health and longevity when you are overweight?

None of us likes to gain weight, but doctors are warning that those extra pounds can put

your body under more strain than you realise.

We all know that weight piles on when we eat more calories than we bum off. But weight is more than an appearance issue — to be at your healthiest, happiest and most energetic, it is vital to be in a healthy range because it's not just your hips, thighs and bottom that store the excess. Silently and more sinisterly, fat is also laid down inside blood vessels and can seriously affect your health.

Researchers claim that being overweight can cause at least 30 different medical conditions. According to Professor Michael Lean at the University of Glasgow: 'The medical risks of being overweight are age-dependent and few very serious .symptoms appear before the age of 40. But overweight women as young as their twenties and thirties may experience breathlessness, back pain, overheating and sweatiness. At 40, health problems such as type-2 diabetes and high blood pressure start to happen. The age of about 60 is when the really big problems occur, such as heart disease and some forms of cancer.'

To determine if you're overweight and therefore at risk, you can use either a measure called the Body Mass Index (BMI - your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared) or cross-reference your height and weight on a chart, such as the one featured on weightlossresources.co.uk. With the BMI measure, a figure of 20 to 25 is deemed OK, 25 to 30 is overweight, and 30 to 35 is obese.

In the US, the Government's Surgeon General advises: 'If you're overweight, losing just 10 per cent of your body weight can improve your health.' So a 5-foot 6-inch woman weighing 170lb would feel a whole lot better if she lost 17lb.

'Even at this low level of overweight, there can be a slight increase in the risk of high blood pressure and type-2 diabetes,' warns Professor Steven Bloom of the School of Medicine at Imperial College, London. 'This is because the pancreas has to work harder to control the body's fluctuating sugar levels.'
