If you’ve been feeling like AI is coming for your job, or that everyone else is using it but you're not, you’re not imagining it.

A lot of people I talk to are struggling with:
– how to use it... effectively.
– anxiety around their job security.
– how to write prompts.

You’re not behind, you just need a clear system.

AI won't take your job, so long as you learn how to use it to your advantage over other people doing your job. Use it to streamline a process or thing that you do within your job. Make it work for you.

Think of it as your own personal super intelligent assistant.

Is it just me or has Customer Service gotten worse???

I will occasionally visit the same coffee establishment close to home, franchised (of course), and I am constantly frustrated by the standard of customer service.

Just me?

I don’t know, maybe I come from a different era - I worked for years as a teenager in hospitality and silver service. But simple things like:

- eye contact
- “of course, no problem”
- open hand rather than pointing
- SMILING

They seem to be in short supply. Especially in the hospitality and retail sectors.

As an employer, I think it’s even more frustrating, especially with minimum wage being so high and gap in pay between inexperienced and experienced staff being so ridiculously small.

If you can’t smile and be customer facing then go and work in the warehouse. And before we start down the “more training” dialogue, I’m certain it’s a personality thing.

My businesses used to feel like they were going through an up and down cycle of busy vs quiet, until I changed how I marketed and advertised.

Before: At the start I used to advertise/market, then we would get really busy. Then I would think great that's it, we've done it. Lo and behold, two months later we would be quiet again.

During: But after reflecting, I realised I needed to when we were busy, I would either stop or naively forget to market and advertise. So then that resulted in a drop off. This cycle was on repeat for years.

After: Now, my businesses operate a constant low cost of acquisition marketing and advertising campaigns. They don't cost a lot, but they keep a constant trickle flow of new customers. The trick is that these campaigns have NO END DATE.

There's only one CEO... for a reason.

The past few months I have realised that there is a balance (and difference) between:

CEO vision, and
Shareholders decision

Ambition, vision, appetite for growth, risk and uncertainty... if you have a shareholder setup with multiple shareholders then in my opinion the decision to follow the CEO's vision has to be unanimous, otherwise you risk mutiny because you've dragged someone kicking and screaming where they don't want to go - eventually they'll turn on you. Your setup could be 10+ shareholders, it could be husband and wife, it could even be your mum, but you must respect the Shareholder decision.

If you don't have a shareholder setup then run your own ship. Don't be afraid to take a chance and some risk. Just be prepared to answer to yourself.

If I'm wrong, tell me...

When creating a fragrance product, most people will buy a "white label" product and slap a new label on it and sell it as their own.

With .uk, you can be rest assured that that NEVER happens. I/we spend months and loads of trials trying to get it right... even altering ingredients by 0.1g sometimes just to get the balance just right.

This saves our moral compass and helps us explain to our customers that WE KNOW what is in our products.

Since the start of Google Ads, inflation of Cost per Click (CPC) is up 10,000%. Imagine being one of the first businesses to advertise on ChatGPT with those stats!!!

It's up because of market saturation, competition, economic inflation, and AI.

So what? You need to find the ways that work for your business to advertise and double down on it rather than diluting your advertising pot across different mediums.

If it's email marketing - employ a communications/content manager
If its Google - stop spending money on leaflet drops
If it's leaflet drops - pay someone to go door to door

Stand up for what you believe to be true.

All business owners have to make gut-based decisions, often without any knowledge, research or information on the outcomes. So it's important that your gut-based decision is yours.

I learnt I was unemployable around 16 years old, I didnt put that in to practice, really, until I was mid-20's. And during those 9-years, bosses would get frustrated with me as they would think I was after their jobs, I would be told off for being too-opinionated at every level of education, and there would be lots of "heated-discussions" along the way.

It's hard being told "you can't" or "you shouldn't" do something... especially if it feels right.

I'm not difficult to work with, I just have high working and moral standards.

Comments from teachers, arguments with colleagues... Does this relate?

Are you confident enough to sell your service/product?

Some entrepreneurs are naturally confident in front of people, but most are not. These people are the brains, the idea-person, the concept visionary, but not the salesman.

If this is speaking directly to you, the best advice I can give you is OVEREXPOSURE. Sign yourself to as many networking events, local business exhibitions, and events as possible in order to force yourself to talk to others about your service or product.

Yes, the first few (if not 20x) youll be nervous, anxious, shy away, stand in the corner. In this scenario get used to being in front of people rather than going to "talk" to people. Start by going to "listen". Ask people:

"Hows business for you at the moment?"
"Whats your ideal customer?"
"Is there anything that you're finding tough at the moment?"

These get people talking to you, allow you to relax, be present, and then start engaging in conversations at your own pace.

If you start a business, YOU HAVE TO SELL. But it doesn't have to be the sleazy stigma that is often associated.

What are some of your go to moves to relax in a sales setting?

I have a trick for launching a new product or service... it's something that explains much more eloquently than me.

Test the market, ask for (potential) customer involvement, explain what you're doing or thinking about doing.

Now here's the kicker - if this is something completely new then you are going to need to spend some money to do this well... call it R&D 😉. Record of video of you explaining the problem, and then your solution to the problem. Sponsor that video on whichever platform is appropriate - let's say £500 on meta ads.

This will start to develop some answers, and some traction. Even better lead them to a questionnaire to complete.

We did this for launching a new myofascial wax that is coming to market in the next few weeks. And the information that we gathered drove the product development.

Then collect DEPOSITS. We will give you X% off your first purchase if you leave us a deposit. You can then leverage that deposit to pay for the manufacturing. This way you're never out of pocket.

Doing this means you build a new product but also a community for that product along the way. Communities build brands, brands = success.
