If your week goes exactly to plan, you’re probably not building anything real.

I block time out for each business.

Looks organised on paper.

But in reality, something always shifts.

Problems pop up.
Decisions need making.
Things break.

That’s the job.

You can plan your week all you like, but business has a habit of rewriting it for you.

So now I don’t rely on the plan.

I just make sure I’m prepared enough to deal with whatever turns up.

This is how .uk started - an artisan fragrance company. 🤫

Most businesses are founded from a problem... ours was a global crisis that led to a big change with an awesome little business that is family run.

You should seriously check out the reed diffusers coming out soon - they're so good!

Most people don’t solve problems… they just work around them.

A few years ago someone mentioned “first principles thinking” to me.

I’d never heard the term.

But I realised it’s how I’ve always approached things.

If something feels slow, expensive, or badly done, I don’t just accept it.

I break it down.

How does it actually work?
What are the core parts that make it function?
Where is it inefficient?

Then I go deep.

I was never academic at school, but if something interests me, I’ll learn it properly. Fast.

That’s where most of my best ideas have come from.

Not copying what exists.

Understanding it… then rebuilding it better.

Whats the one thing that you're not good at? Be honest!

Mine is communication - I only really take calls in the car, I voice note everything. But emails, whatsapps, texts are not my friend.

I have systems now that stop me from being a bad communicator.

Please make me feel better about this... what are you not good at?

Your business doesn’t win on facts… it wins on perception.

You can have the better product.
The better service.
More experience.

But if people don’t feel like they trust you, it won’t matter.

Customers don’t buy based on a spreadsheet.

They buy based on what they see, hear, and believe.

Reviews.
Reputation.
First impressions.
Gut feeling.

That’s what drives decisions.

I’ve seen great businesses struggle because they don’t connect.

And average ones fly because they do.

It’s not always logical.

But it’s always real.

Over the years, I’ve been involved in or started various different businesses, gone through two major operations, and become a father. What I’ve learnt from all of that is that I have a lot of information, knowledge, mistakes, and traumas rattling around in my head. Social media is a great platform for me to unload and share those experiences, which makes dealing with them day to day more manageable… A problem shared is a problem halved 💪🏻

Have you heard of "First Principle Thinking"?

I hadn't until a few years ago, when someone mentioned it to me as a process as to how they resolve a problem.

And I quickly realised that that is kind of how my brain works all the time!

First thing... there's often a problem or something that I come across that I feel can be done better, quicker, more cost-effective, and provide a better service,

And then the second thing is, what do I need to do to understand about how this works, what are the basic principles that make this product/service function?

And then simply I absorb knowledge! I was never an academic at school, but if there is a topic that I'm interested in I absorb knowledge as if it's going out of fashion.

Most people don’t fail in business because their idea is bad… they fail because they weren’t ready for what comes with it.

Everyone talks about freedom.

No one talks about the pressure.

Inconsistent income.
Long hours.
Constant problem solving.
And being told “no” more times than you can count.

Starting a business isn’t just a career choice.

It’s a complete lifestyle shift.

If you don’t have a plan, some financial breathing room, and the resilience to keep going when it’s not working…

it will chew you up.

And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with choosing a stable career, earning well, and avoiding all of that.

Entrepreneurship isn’t better.

It’s just different.

PLEASE DON'T START A BUSINESS, unless...

- you have a clear plan
- have two-years worth of liveable money stored away
- and an insatiable drive to succeed, despite being told "no" and that your idea "is stupid"

Too many people are getting themselves by seeking the freedom of self employment or entrepreneurship. Trust me it's not easy.

There is no shame or embarrassment about just being an employee, working up the career ladder and earning well... without the stress and bo****ks associated with running your own business.

A business in its early years is unpredictable.

It doesn’t care if it’s 10pm.
It doesn’t care if it’s the weekend.
It doesn’t care what else you’ve got going on.

It takes your time, your energy, your focus… constantly.

That’s manageable when your only responsibility is yourself.

It’s very different when you’ve got a partner, kids, and people relying on you to show up properly every day.

Can you still build a business with a family?

Of course.

But don’t pretend it’s the same game.

It’s not.

It’s the same rules… just played on hard mode.

The trick to know if a business will be successful...

Do you and your business "connect" with your customers/potential customers??

Mass opinion and hysteria drive the key markers of any business - that's why we rely so much on reviews and testimonials. Social proof is EVERYTHING.

But it can be sometimes the "opinion" rather than something tangible that determines business success OR failure - "they look too young", "not enough experience", "too old to know about AI", or "they've got a lambo, they must be good"

Did I miss anything? 🤔

16/03/2026

I have made A LOT of mistakes over the years.

Now, before I get involved in any business I have to check in with myself...

"Do I have the capacity and/or the excitement for this project"

Because once I'm involved in a project, I'm ALL IN! I won't stop until it's working - just ask my partners involved in 🤣

I must be a pain in the ass to work with!!!
