All That Water Remembers
Oil on cradled wood panel, 50 × 50 cm

Lilies slowly come into view through cool layers of blue, hovering just above the darker water beneath. I was thinking about memory here as something quiet and imprecise, more like a feeling than a story.

The paint is built up in soft layers so the surface stays calm, with depth that reveals itself gradually rather than all at once.

Part of the Milkwater series.
Float framed in white oak.

Morning Veil
300 × 300 mm
Oil on cradled wood panel

Morning Veil is part of Milkwater, a series that marks a quieter shift in my painting.

I’ve become less interested in defining things clearly, and more drawn to atmosphere, restraint and what sits just beneath the surface. Cool light, water and lilies surface slowly through veils of paint, softening and dissolving rather than fixing themselves in place.

Although the work references early light, it’s painted in the evening, when the day has settled and everything feels muted and reflective. That sense of suspension, between clarity and blur, runs through the series.

More from Milkwater coming soon…

A painting completed at the weekend. I’ve been studying and exploring water, and feeling inspired by Sylvia Plath. The darkness and depth, the glinting light on the surface, the current and movement.

‘A little light is filtering from the water flowers.
Their leaves do not wish us to hurry:
They are round and flat and full of dark advice.

Cold worlds shake from the oar.
The spirit of blackness is in us, it is in the fishes.
A snag is lifting a valedictory, pale hand;

Stars open among the lilies.
Are you not blinded by such expressionless sirens?
This is the silence of astounded souls.’

From ‘Crossing the Water’ Sylvia Plath.

Started this a few weeks ago and finished this morning. Delphiniums, peonies, blue alpines. Weirdly I spent longest on the background of this one, there’s about 6 layers of colour and texture.

‘Living Liberty’ is the next in my ‘Beneath the Bloom’ series, with the subject of peonies, salvia and roses (the short bloom of peonies being one of my favourites), of which I’ve just listed on my shop. I painted this in an alla prima method (wet on wet) from life in oil paints on beautiful wood panel, with oak coloured stained edges. This one needs a little longer to dry, and will be ready to post at the end of July.
