A painting completed at the weekend. I’ve been studying and exploring water, and feeling inspired by Sylvia Plath. The darkness and depth, the glinting light on the surface, the current and movement.

ā€˜A little light is filtering from the water flowers.
Their leaves do not wish us to hurry:
They are round and flat and full of dark advice.

Cold worlds shake from the oar.
The spirit of blackness is in us, it is in the fishes.
A snag is lifting a valedictory, pale hand;

Stars open among the lilies.
Are you not blinded by such expressionless sirens?
This is the silence of astounded souls.’

From ā€˜Crossing the Water’ Sylvia Plath.

Started this a few weeks ago and finished this morning. Delphiniums, peonies, blue alpines. Weirdly I spent longest on the background of this one, there’s about 6 layers of colour and texture.

ā€˜Living Liberty’ is the next in my ā€˜Beneath the Bloom’ series, with the subject of peonies, salvia and roses (the short bloom of peonies being one of my favourites), of which I’ve just listed on my shop. I painted this in an alla prima method (wet on wet) from life in oil paints on beautiful wood panel, with oak coloured stained edges. This one needs a little longer to dry, and will be ready to post at the end of July.

Oil on cradled wood panel, A5 148 x 210 millimetres/5.8 x 8.3 inches

I’m pleased to share these new prints available of my triptych ā€˜Dawn, Day, Dusk’. Beautifully giclee printed on light fast paper, limited to an edition run of 20. I’m finding that these work so well in a variety of spots around my house due to the neutral colour palette 🄰 With these I was considering mortality, the short moment of bloom… not taking life for granted https://marialeewarren.co.uk/shop/prints

There is more than originally meets the eye with this one. At first, yes a pretty flower, but there’s an uneasiness, an encroaching darkness and shadows. ā€˜Follicular’, oil on wood board.

What’s your story?

The purpose of asana practice (yoga poses) is to achieve comfort in the body in preparation for sitting in stillness. My priority is to make yoga safe and accessible for everyone, through modifications and alternatives. Yoga is a complementary practice to activities such as weights and cardio, by helping to maintain a full range of movement in the body, and activating the parasympathetic nervous system. I encourage students to bring movement into otherwise static postures, to help release the body’s fascia.

I began my yoga practice in 2012 as a way to manage the pain and physical limitations I experienced due to being born with a neural tube defect. I went on to study Sivananda yoga and Vipassana meditation in Kerela, India, in 2015. In 2016 I embarked on teacher training at Yoga London. Since then I have worked on specialist yoga events with international teachers at Secret Yoga Club, and taught classes in Camden, London.

I’m currently jamming to Alice Coltrane, who was the wife of jazz musician John Coltrane. After his death she developed a yoga practice, founding an Ashram in California in the 70s . Her meditative music is astonishingly beautiful - I like to include a track or two in my classes! I also love to play anything by Bristol based musician Phaeleh. His ambient work is perfect for yoga.

Outside class I enjoy dance, particularly 5 rhythms! I spend a lot of time painting abstract art in my studio.
