Mental Health Awareness Week: Understanding Your Nervous System
Each day this week, for Mental Health Awareness Week, I'm sharing a tool that I use in sessions with my clients.
Today’s tool is all about recognising which part of your nervous system is activated, so you can choose the most supportive self-care to meet it.
This comes from Polyvagal Theory, which I simplify into three core states for clients:
Shutdown:
When life feels completely overwhelming, your nervous system may respond by pulling the brakes.
You feel frozen, numb, disconnected.
You might withdraw from others, struggle to get out of bed, or feel like nothing matters.
It’s depression. It’s hopelessness.
It’s your nervous system’s “power save mode” - a way to survive when things feel too much.
Self-care for Shutdown:
🩵 Gentle movement (stretching, or opening the curtains to let daylight in)
🩵 Warmth - a blanket, hot drink, or bath
🩵 Connection without pressure (a podcast, a pet, being near someone)
Fight or Flight:
Here, everything is overactive.
You may feel panicky, worried, irritable, or on edge.
Your heart races, thoughts spiral, and you’re either trying to fix everything or run from it (suicidal thoughts or trying to change your whole life, new job/new house/new country).
This is anxiety. It's intrusive thoughts, where everything feels just too much.
Self-care for Fight or Flight:
💙 Movement - run, dance, shake it out
💙 Journaling or drawing what you’re feeling
💙 Breathwork to reconnect your mind and heart
Connection & Stillness:
This is the ideal state - not perfection, but presence.
You feel calm, playful and open.
You don’t have to prove anything. You’re allowed to rest.
It’s self-awareness. It's self-understanding where you step into the communication style "I'm ok, you're ok".
Self-care to stay here:
💜 Take in someone else’s smile
💜 Creative play (music, cooking, drawing, walking, reading, socialising)
💜 Communicate without bracing for rejection or judgement
💭 Which state feels most familiar to you right now?
💭 What might your nervous system be asking for today?
There’s no “wrong” place to be. Each state has a purpose.
But the more we can name it, the more power we have to meet it with gentleness.
If you’d like help recognising your patterns and moving toward more days of connection and stillness, I have availability for therapy sessions.
