The festive season has finally caught up with me and my immune system has taken a hit 🤧
Cold & flu season seems to be hitting everyone this January, and instead of pushing through, I’ve been focusing on supporting my body and letting it do what it needs to do.
When I’m unwell, my non-negotiables are simple but intentional:
Vitamin C & Zinc
These are supplements I only take when I’m feeling run down or unwell, not something I take all year round. Both vitamin C and zinc play important roles in immune function, and short-term supplementation can help support the body during these periods. BUT they don’t replace the foundations of whole food nutrition.
I don’t believe in taking lots of supplements “just because”. I believe in strategic, intentional supplementation based on what the body actually needs.
Fresh air & gentle movement
This is so underrated when you’re unwell. Even a short walk helps clear congestion for me and supports circulation and lymphatic flow, it really helps everything to shift!
Warm foods over cold
Warm, nourishing meals are generally easier to digest than cold foods straight from the fridge. When the body is fighting an infection, reducing the energy needed for digestion allows more energy to be directed towards immune repair!
Supporting my gut bugs with fibre
Your little friends in your gut can do wonders for you but only if you support them. When your gut bacteria ferment fibre they produce short-chain-fatty-acids (SCFAs) which help support your gut lining, regulate inflammation + support your immune system!
Staying warm
This might sound simple, but it’s often overlooked, especially keeping your feet warm! When you’re unwell, the body prioritises vital organs, and circulation to the hands and feet can reduce. Staying warm helps conserve energy and supports the body staying in a rest-and-repair state.
Rest, sleep & slowing down
I’m guilty of pushing through at times, but rest and sleep are where recovery actually happens. Prioritising this is fundamental for recovery ❤️🩹
Sometimes healing isn’t about doing more…
It’s about listening, supporting, and allowing the body to do what it’s designed to do 💚
