There wasn't a dry eye in the house...
I recently got back from the Lakes District here in the UK.
If you don't know it, its a very wild mountainous area in the middle of the country.
I’d spent the first 3 days with Mrs Gorilla Grips and the kids.
2 days on my own.
Then my good friend H came up for the Keswick Mountain Festival.
I love training, working with weights.
But I also love the great outdoors and climbing.
I had a lot of firsts on this trip.
Rock climbing faces I'd never done before.
Via Feratta (that’s scary) and meeting the owner of Honister mine.
Swimming to a remote island (where they filmed Swallows and Amazons).
Swimming in high winds and rough water.
Seeing my favourite group the Petebog Fairies.
Bagging another Wainwright.
A triathlon in rain and high winds.
See and listen hero of mine Sir Chris Bonnington, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house...I’ll tell you why in a moment.
The above isn’t a bragging list.
But all I was simply trying to say was…
“Add some adventure to what you like to do.”
Be it training - enter an event.
Eating out - just walk in to a place, don’t look at trip advisor.
Walking - Just head out and see what you find.
Sport - Try something you’ve never done before.
So what about when I went to see Chris Bonnington?
For those of you in the US, you may not have hear of him.
He's a very famous British mountaineer.
At 80 years of age he spoke about his life.
Some of the 19 expeditions to the Himalayas.
Everest and the first ascent of the south face of Annapurna.
The friends he lost while climbing with them.
The death of his wife in 2014.
Re-climbing Old Man Hoy at the age of 80!
Don’t believe me, check out the video at the bottom of this email.
He says it better than me.
Keep on training hard, whatever your age.
Have a great weekend.
