🧠 Case Study: Supporting Strength, Balance & Confidence After MND Diagnosis 🧠
I’ve been working with a gentleman in his 80s with a recent suspected diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a progressive neurological condition. When we first met, he was experiencing frequent falls (up to several times a week) and his strength, balance, and confidence were at an all-time low. Everyday tasks had become increasingly difficult and unsafe.
Over the past two months, we’ve had regular physiotherapy sessions focusing on improving endurance, balance, and mobility through targeted and engaging exercises. Since beginning treatment, his walking is faster and more balanced, his falls have reduced significantly, and he now feels much steadier on his feet. His overall strength and endurance has improved, and so has his confidence in moving around safely at home.
In addition to our home-based physiotherapy sessions, I’ve supported him in accessing and referring to the right services for mobility aids and home adaptations, helping to create a safer and more manageable living environment. Our work together is ongoing, with a continued focus on developing strength, endurance, and balance as part of his overall care!
Having a progressive neurological condition like MND doesn’t mean physiotherapy can’t help. In this case, we’ve been able to reverse some of the deconditioning that contributed to weakness and falls. Physiotherapy can also support people with a progressive or existing neurological condition to stay fitter, safer, and more independent for longer!
