Many yogi’s will have chanted OM and other wonderful mantras during yoga class, maybe aware of their meaning or maybe just enjoying the beautiful harmonies, but what do they actually mean?
Well, a mantra is a sacred word or phrase that is either chanted out loud or silently, in the yoga class or meditation, usually to invoke spirituality. The end goal being liberation.
Derived from Sanskrit, mantra means “mind instrument”
Mantras aren’t just words, they are symbolic and sacred sounds with potential healing powers..the sound making them so potent.
Each word or phrase is traditionally repeated 108 times, 108 being a sacred number in yoga, mala beads can really help with this, but even a few lines repeated can have a powerful effect.
You may have heard or chanted
Om Namah Shivaya.
This is one of the most powerful Mantras and if you’ve been to one of my classes, you’ll be familiar with this.
Om (pronounced) A-U-M is the vibrational sound of the universe.
Namah comes from Namaha which roughly translates as “bow”
Shivaya attributes to Lord Shiva, the Destroyer, who is revered for his transformative power. He created the mantra to bring us closer to the divine.
As we repeat the mantra, we’re inviting the universe to guide us, to protect us and awaken us to our true nature.
Other mantras you may have heard:
Shanti which means peace
When shanti is repeated three times, we’re calling for peace of the mind, voice and physical body.
Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha
Paying homage to Lord Ganesha, the loving deity who helps unblock obstacles from our path.
It amazes me how every time I repeat this this mantra, I suddenly find the blockage mental or otherwise miraculously gone!!
Not only is there beauty and a certain poetry to these mantras, research has shown they benefit us mentally too .
