Fermented foods & the brain?! 🧠There’s a huge link between the two, as an imbalance in the bacteria in our gut can influence our mood, anxiety, and mental health through the production of neurotransmitters (like serotonin) in the gut. Some studies suggest that consuming probiotics from the fermented foods may help reduce anxiety and depression & positively influences the gut microbiota, improving the balance of neurochemicals!

5 reasons why you may not be able to beat the bloat ✨

Bloating isn’t always down to what you eat but HOW you eat

These tips and tricks are super easy to incorporate into your daily lifestyle. Even starting off with one of these tips each week can help reduce inflammation and ease the bloat 🤗

That being said bloating is normal as (women) go through hormonal changes throughout the month however chronic, painful and prolonged bloating before and after eating is not normal & there could be external factors which are causing inflammation

These tips in the meantime whilst getting down to the root cause, can help in starting to repair and heal your gut lining

Save this post as a reminder for when your feeling a lil bloated! 🤍

How To Heal Your Gut Naturally (4 easy steps)

1. Opt for fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and limit processed foods which contain high levels of sugar

2. Take note of fatigue, bloating, anxiety, gas or any other symptoms that you might be experiencing before, during and after eating. This will allow you to start mapping patterns and become aware of what foods might be effecting your body. If you continually eat foods that don’t react well to your body, it can damage your delicate digestive lining and balance of good bacteria. Log your findings for at least 2 weeks

3. Probiotic foods contain microrganisims that improve the helpful digestive bacteria in your body and helps to restore the natural balance of bacteria in your gut. Some of my fave probiotics are: sauerkraut, live yogurt, kefir, kimchi, raw cheeses (parmesan, edam)
Prebiotic foods feed our probiotics. They are either not digested, or only partially digestible. They leave behind fiber that passes without breaking down in the stomach and go to the gut where they ferment and feed the probiotic bacteria. Fave prebiotics: leeks, yellow and white onion, asparagus, walnuts, and flaxseeds

4. Adding in foods to help thicken the gut wall to prevent tears that lead to conditions such as Leaky Gut Syndrome. Best food sources: blueberries, blackberries, figs, cranberries, dark unsweetened chocolate, avocado, brussels sprouts, radicchio, broccoli, cabbage, okra, shiitake mushrooms. All these are complex foods and protein sources that improve immunity. They are cooling, nourishing and have enzymes to help strengthen the gut wall and stop it from permeating

As always, not one method fits all but these 4 tips are going to be key in taking the first steps into healing your gut naturally 🥑

What I do for my own gut health ———>

Sleep is SO important and mostly overlooked when it comes to your gut. How could sleep have an affect on slowing down digestion? Well it does & is one of the root causes of mood related digestion conditions

🥑 TIP: make your bedtime routine a happy and calming space. I’ve been saying this to everyone at the moment but a weighted eye mask has really improved my quality of sleep

Intuitive Eating: one of the best decisions I made, after struggling with yo-yo dieting and intense fasting & has been key in helping my gut heal

🥑TIP: I like to go with 70/30 with my nutrition and if I crave something I eat it - the worst thing you can do for your eating habits, is restrict yourself and put your body under more stress

Low Impact Workouts, are definitely not something you think that could affect your gut but it does! High intensity cardio redirects the blood flow away from our gut and to our lungs, brain and the muscles we’re using, meaning less movement is able to take place in our gut E.G slowing down digestion and increases gut inflammation

This is not to say that high-intensity workouts are always bad for you, you just need to know how to manage balancing these workouts with your gut such as incorporating low intensity/rest days

🥑TIP: Swap in a couple of days of low impact workouts to your routine (pilates, stairmaster)

Stress Management: the gut-brain axis is the communication pathway between the central nervous system and your gastrointestinal tract. Acute and chronic stress will change the balance in our gut microbiome by favouring unhelpful bacteria that our body doesn’t need, which can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression

🥑TIP: Meditation, nature walks, frequency music and EFT (emotional freedom technique) tapping, really helps me to de-stress and increases more of the serotonin in my gut
