Back at it after a week off with a nasty bug… and let me tell you, it humbled me!

I used to feel guilty or anxious about taking time off, especially when I was in a good routine. But being sick reminded me of something important: rest is part of the process. Not a setback, not a failure — just part of being human.

Coming back after being unwell can feel frustrating,.. But here’s what I’ve learned (and what I always tell my clients):

1. Start slow. Your body’s been healing. You’re not meant to bounce back at 100% instantly. Today was more about movement than momentum.

2. Ditch the ego. You might need to drop the weights, reduce the sets, or take more rest — and that’s okay. Pushing too hard too soon will just send you backwards.

3. Hydrate + fuel properly. After being sick, your body needs nutrients. Prioritise whole foods, water, and electrolytes to support recovery.

4. Focus on how you feel, not how you perform. If something doesn’t feel right, listen to that.

5. Be proud. Showing up after a setback — even if it’s just to move your body for 20 minutes — is a win.

My post sick session wasn’t about hitting PBs. It was about reconnecting with my routine, shaking off the rust, and giving my body a little nudge in the right direction.

If you’re coming back after being unwell, take this as your reminder to go easy on yourself — consistency isn’t about being perfect, it’s about showing up when you can, and adapting when you need to.

You’ve got this.
