I often get asked for advice as a therapist, and I turn the question back to the person seeking help. I ask them what they would like to do, what steps they can take, and what has worked for them in the past. I find that answering a question with another question can be a powerful tool!

I totally understand that this approach can be a bit frustrating for the person in front of me—I’ve been in that chair myself and felt that same frustration!

The reason I steer clear of giving advice is simple: it's their life, and ultimately, their choice. So, why seek therapy if they can't find the answers to their own questions? Perhaps it’s because therapy provides a safe space to explore thoughts and feelings without the pressure of judgment or unsolicited advice. It might just be the opportunity to be heard and to think things through with someone who isn’t directly involved in the situation.

Weekends with my little ones used to feel a bit simpler. Nowadays, it can be tough when they choose to hang out with friends instead of spending family time, when they retreat to their rooms, or when they don’t jump out of bed early like they used to, excited to play in the park. I realize this change might be just as challenging for them as they navigate growing into young adults, figuring out who they are.

I sometimes find myself not handling these moments as well as I’d like, often driven by fear or disappointment in myself. When this happens, I make sure to share my feelings with them. I let them know that I could have approached things differently, and that my reactions stemmed from worry—whether it was for them, for myself, or both. I also take the time to apologize.

Making mistakes is part of being human, but how we respond to those moments is what truly matters.

Saturday mornings are perfect for a cozy lie-in, but sometimes life has other plans! 😴 It can be a bit frustrating to wake up at 6 am, right? This morning, I found a lovely way to shake off that grumpiness by enjoying a refreshing dog walk with a friend. 🐶 It’s always so helpful to share our weekly challenges and parenting struggles while soaking in some fresh air. 🌬️ What are your go-to strategies for resetting your day?

Ask them What They Need

If I try to do something to help my teenagers its very often rejected. I know why, because I'm doing what I think will help and haven’t asked what they need.

And I get that, I do it myself when I'm doing something and someone helps but it’s not what I want or need.

So this one is simple, ask them what you can do to help and listen to what they say. They might not know and thats ok maybe then you can make some suggestions but listen to them and see if what they are asking for is possible

Exam Prep Hints and Tips

Let's take a closer look at their thoughts together!

Are they feeling a bit worried about failing, maybe thinking they don’t have the knowledge or skills you need?

How important does this thought feel to them right now?

What other thoughts could be just as valid to consider?

If they had a magic wand, what changes would they like to make?

What is one small step they could take towards making that change happen?

Breathing techniques are a wonderful and effective way to help your body relax and your mind feel peaceful.

With so many different breathing techniques to choose from, it's a lovely idea to find one that your teen truly enjoys and can easily practice.

Why not make it a fun activity to do together? You could even show them how you use the technique when you're facing a challenge or feeling a bit stressed.

One of my favourite techniques is taking three deep breaths, noticing how your body feels on the inhale and letting go of any anxiety or stress on the exhale. It's simple yet so effective!

# Revision Planning

I totally get it—no one likes being told what to do or having every little step laid out for them.

So, here’s a friendly tip: why not draft the timetable together with your child?

Choose the right moment for this—discussions typically go much smoother when they’re not tired, hungry, or thirsty.

If your child is creative, have a blast making the timetable together! If not, a template can do the trick.

Don’t forget to think about when they’ll need breaks and rewards and pencil those in as well. It’s much easier to stick to when there’s some fun time included! I like to add in family time, dinner, or even some free time to keep things balanced.

Exams can be really challenging for kids!

It's such an important moment that can feel super heavy.

Make sure to be there to listen if they're having a tough time. Set aside any worries you might have and just be present for them. It could be as simple as giving them a hug, sitting next to them while they watch their favorite show, or even tucking them in bed.

Remember, not passing an exam or not doing as well as they hoped doesn't mean they've failed; it might just feel that way to them.

# # Back to Basics

Hydration, diet, exercise, and sleep are all super important for keeping our brains in tip-top shape!

I don't know about you, but getting my teenagers to sleep can be quite the challenge. Research shows that hormones can play a big role in why they want to stay up late and sleep in, which makes those early school mornings a bit tricky.

On the bright side, exercise is a breeze in our house since they all play rugby!

Every household has its own unique challenges. Remember, it doesn’t have to be a massive overhaul! Maybe consider introducing a healthy snack and a glass of water during study time. Also, think about setting a time to turn off screens before bed, giving them a chance to unwind and help them fall asleep more easily. A quick walk around the block or a little kickabout in the garden during breaks can make a world of difference too!

# Exam Hints & Tips

My time in school significantly influenced my adult reactions, especially when I started working in a school.

# # What felt weird?
The dynamics of friendship groups made me feel like the ‘good girl’ always doing others' homework to fit in.

The fear of making mistakes or speaking up lingered.

The pressure to excel in exams and avoid detention was overwhelming.

My biggest revelation was how these feelings resurfaced with my school-age children. Their detentions felt monumental, and poor test scores felt like my failure. It wasn't just about them; it reflected my feelings of inadequacy.

When I felt angry, it was really disappointment in myself.

# # How does this relate to exam stress?
Reflect on how your experiences shape your reactions, and consider how to respond best for both you and your child.

While I still face exam-related anxiety, I focus on what my children truly need.

Ah, summer seems like such a distant memory now, doesn’t it? With a new academic year upon us, it's time to get back into those familiar routines.

I find that I’m always in a better mood for after-school sports when the sun is shining brightly. It can feel a bit more like a chore when the evenings start to get dark and chilly.

To lift my spirits, I'm on a mission to get autumn-ready and hunt for a fabulous pair of wellie boots!

What little things help you embrace the colder and wetter days?
