I couldn’t have said it better myself 🥰

Hove seafront is glorious at the moment. And this cheeky seagull pic I took yesterday perfectly illustrates something I wrote in my next Brighton Argus article (I’ll post the link on Facebook when it comes out):

If your shadow is longer than you, you’re not making vitamin D from the sun.

Which, unless you live near the equator, means that throughout winter, and for much of spring and autumn too, many of us won’t be getting enough vitamin D.

What constitutes “enough” is still debated, but we do know that low levels have been linked to increased frequency and severity of colds, flus and other upper respiratory tract infections, as well as a broad ranges of conditions including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, eczema and a lot more.

Do still get out and enjoy the winter sun, though, as the spectrum of light it provides this time year is also important for mental and physical health. And it’s just so beautiful out there on days like today ☀️

March is a turning point in the year, with the days getting longer we can enjoy more daylight, and hopefully sunshine. This helps boost our energy levels and spending more time in nature can help improve our mental wellbeing.

March is also a transitional time of year for our fruit and vegetables and is a great time to focus on nutrient-dense seasonal foods. We still have the hearty warming winter root vegetables with new varieties becoming available like spring greens, and new season rhubarb.
