When pharmacy students want to know what a typical day is like...it's never the same every day!

See what our founder's experience was like when being shadowed by pharmacy students.

Has anyone else taken on students in prison? What were your experiences?

Or have you shadowed in prisons? Get in touch! We'd love to hear more!

There are individuals of all age groups in prison.

Tip: Think about what conditions you see in those age groups. That's a better starting point.

During this conversation there was a lot of discouragement about working in this sector because "people have committed crimes."

The difference between this video and the previous one...

But the truth is, we don't know about peoples' crimes unless it's a high profile case or we're hearing it through the grapevine.

That's how we separate personal influence from professional actions.

A snippet of a genuine conversation we had with someone last week who has never worked in prison.

It was quite different to the usual conversations we tend to have.

As a free woman, Amina won't share even her paracetamol with anyone as it reminds her of trading medicines in prison.

In prison, if you trade medicines you can either be seen as the dealer or the target.

Amina chose to stay away from both and this clip shows her lingering institutional trauma even to this day.

It's holiday season and whether you celebrate or not, many of you will spend time with family.

During this time of year, the numbers of people who self-harm and/or attempt to end their lives can increase.

While we might not always see medicines changes, itโ€™s a good idea to check in on your patients when they come to pick up their prescriptions to see how theyโ€™re doing.

For those who work in the community, just because someone has been released from prison doesnโ€™t mean everything is perfect for them. It can actually be quite tough to get back on their feet, especially when many services are closed or have reduced hours during the holidays.

You can find information in the bio below about:
๐Ÿ”— Pharmacy opening hours in London over the Christmas and New Year periodย
๐Ÿ”— The NHS page to locate open pharmacies near you.

If you work in prison, please share this information with your reception teams to help those being released understand how to find help with their medicines when they return to the community.

โ„๏ธ Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season from Prison Pharmacy Connect!

A busy four weeks for Prison Pharmacy Connect:

1/ Having a catch up with Bevis who we met one year ago when we went to the panel discussion "Is it a crime to be poor?" Watch this space, Bevis has some amazing things on the horizon!

2/ Another PPC roadshow but this time at Keele University organised by British Pharmaceutical Students' Association: ๐—จ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ฃ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜†. It's always fantastic meeting like minded people who aren't afraid to look beyond traditional career paths.

3/ Once a year we always attend an event on the Criminal Justice System. This year we went to The Irene Taylor Trust's event co-hosted with Koestler Arts. Seeing prison leavers heal themselves and others through music because it ๐™œ๐™–๐™ซ๐™š ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ข ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ž๐™ง ๐™ง๐™๐™ฎ๐™ฉ๐™๐™ข ๐™—๐™–๐™˜๐™  was truly wholesome.

4/ Releasing our next podcast on The Prison Pharmacy Connect Show with founder of ๐—•๐—ฒ๐˜†๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—•๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜‡ ๐—–๐—œ๐—–, Lei Bartley, who also attended the Clinical Pharmacy Congress with PPC in May. Have you listened to it yet? (YouTube/Spotify)

5/ Starting to create our website- it's often a misconception you need this from the outset. Not necessarily, it's always a work in progress!

6/ An article in The Pharmacist because people need to recognise that individuals in prison have healthcare needs just as anyone else outside prison.

Let's see what the next four weeks bring.

What have you been up to and what will you be working on over the next four weeks?

It's today.

To any pharmacy student wondering how we provide care to people with AIDS in prison, everyone is referred to the local GUM clinic / GUM Consultant (if they work onsite).

It's about having strong partnerships across the system so people receive the right treatment at the right time to be able to live a healthy life.

We cannot wait for this to start!

Last week Prison Pharmacy Connect went to 's Penine Conference.

Our Founder, Kaniksha, shared her career journey and alongside four other unique pharmacy professionals.

Project Consultant- Noni
Noni had no intention to stay in the traditional roles of pharmacy and she's proven it with her track record of research.

Aesthetics Pharmacy- Ella
Ella needed change from community pharmacy and went into the unknown into the world of aesthetics.

Clinical Writer- Faye
Faye went down the traditional route of hospital pharmacy but is now a clinical writer responsible for some important publications we rely on in healthcare.

Sports Pharmacists- Dickie
Bringing together his passion for sports and pharmacy, Dickie's now helping athletes understand how medicines can impact their bodies and performance.

Prison Pharmacy- Kaniksha
Prisons always face stigma, no one wants to speak about it, not even a prison pharmacy career. Kaniksha's here to change that.

It's always wonderful connecting with people outside of the traditional roles.

How about you? Where are you hoping your career takes you?
