🫐🍓 Berries & the gut: What Ayurveda taught me that changed everything.

As someone who works closely with people dealing with chronic digestive and autoimmune issues, from Crohn’s to diverticulitis, I get a lot of questions about berries.

Berries are often seen as the ultimate “healthy” food. And yes, they can be, in the right context.

From an Ayurvedic lens, berries are light, cooling, drying, and astringent, qualities that can aggravate Vata, and over time, even Pitta. For people with sensitive digestion, chronic gut issues (like Crohn’s or diverticulitis), or inflammatory tendencies, this can slowly build imbalance.

Most people don't notice this overnight. But if you are eating raw berries every day, especially out of season, it might be worth paying attention.

When I personally stopped eating them regularly:
💚 My skin cleared up.
💚 For my husband (who was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease ): Bloating and discomfort eased once we stopped assuming “healthy” meant “healthy for us.”
💚 Now, I enjoy berries occasionally. Today we are traveling, it’s 30+ C, digestion feels strong and berries feel good.

✅ I don’t eat them daily
✅ I avoid them raw in cooler seasons or during flares
✅ I cook or pair them with subtle spices to soften their effects

This could not be further restriction, Ayurveda's approach gives us the tools to build a relationship with ourselves and what we consume and the environment we are in.

Food is never just “good” or “bad.” It’s about timing, intention, and individuality.

If you are navigating gut issues, skin flares, or just generally feeling unwell, maybe it is time to consider not cutting out foods completely.l
Maybe it it is time to think about listening differently.

The base of all our homemade meals 🌱

I almost always start with a simple spice preparation, usually a gentle base of subtle spices and fresh herbs to support digestion and bring a sense of comfort and balance to each meal.

What you see here is just one example, a spice blend I made a few moments ago for a 'spaghetti Bolognese' inspired dish. Just a few subtle spices and fresh herbs, to bring warmth and ease.

Each meal is different, and so are the spices I use, always chosen with care for how they feel in the body, not just how they taste.

If you'd like the recipe for this blend, comment “recipe” below and I’ll send it to your inbox.

🌱 Lentils: The Superfood You Need in Your Diet! 🥣

Lentils have been nourishing cultures for centuries, yet they remain one of the most underrated superfoods. Packed with protein, fibre, and essential minerals, they are an affordable and versatile addition to any diet.

See below the list of different types of lentils and their benefits:

💛 Moong (Yellow Lentils) – Light, easy to digest, and great for gut health.

🧡 Masoor (Red Lentils) – A natural source of iron for energy and vitality.

💚 Green Lentils – High in fibre, keeping digestion smooth and steady.

🖤 Urad (Black Lentils) – Rich in minerals, supporting strong bones and endurance.

💛 Chana (Split Chickpeas) – Low glycaemic index, helping balance blood sugar.

🤎 Brown Lentils – Mild and earthy, great for soups and stews.

❤️ Puy Lentils – High in protein and known for their firm texture.

💜 Black Beluga Lentils – Packed with antioxidants and a delicious addition to salads.

Lentils are not just for soups and curries! Try them in salads, stews, or even as a meat alternative. However you cook them; especially prepared with subtle spices, they will fuel your body with essential nutrients.

A big thank you to The Times of India and Country Life Foods for highlighting the benefits of this simple yet powerful food. Our personal favourite is a simple Masoor Dhal, with rice and sometimes a chapati. It's an absolute staple in our home as it's so versatile, light, nourishing, convenient, delicious... I could go on 🤓 It is just 😘🤌 If you have tried it, you know what I mean!

As we transition into Vata season (autumn/winter), the cold, dry, and windy conditions can aggravate the Vata dosha, leading to imbalances like anxiety, restlessness, dry skin, and stiff joints. Marma Point Massage, a traditional Ayurvedic therapy, helps counteract these effects by stimulating vital energy points to restore balance.

Benefits of Marma Point Massage.

Grounds and Calms the Nervous System: Marma massage uses warm, herbal oils that soothe the nervous system, reducing anxiety and promoting deep relaxation.

Improves Circulation and Flexibility: The targeted pressure on marma points improves circulation and releases tension, which is especially beneficial for stiff joints common during colder months.

Nourishes and Hydrates the Skin: Regular oil massage nourishes the skin, keeping it hydrated and preventing the dryness typical in autumn and winter.

Boosts Immunity: Stimulating marma points enhances lymphatic drainage and detoxification, strengthening the body’s immune response.

Treat yourself or a loved one to a rejuvenating experience this season at the UK Ayurvedic Centre.

A monthly oil massage for you or a personalised gift card makes the perfect gift to embrace the changing seasons with balance and vitality. 🌻💚
