“Hair growth shampoos make your hair grow faster.”
This is one of the biggest myths in the industry.
Hair growth rate is determined by the hair cycle:
• Anagen (growth phase)
• Catagen (transition phase)
• Telogen (resting/shedding phase)
This cycle is regulated by genetics, hormones, and internal health factors.
A shampoo does not have the ability to increase your hair growth rate.
It cannot override your biology.
⸻
So why do people think they work?
Because they’re confusing growth with conditions for growth.
There’s a difference.
⸻
What shampoos can actually influence:
The scalp environment.
And this part does matter.
An unhealthy scalp can interfere with optimal follicle function.
Common issues include:
• Follicular occlusion (buildup of sebum, keratin, product residue)
• Micro-inflammation
• Microbial imbalance (yeast/bacteria)
• Oxidative stress within the follicular environment
These factors can contribute to:
• Increased shedding
• Poor hair quality
• Reduced density appearance
• Progression of miniaturisation in androgen-sensitive hair
⸻
So what should a good shampoo do?
✔️ Cleanse the scalp effectively
✔️ Remove buildup without over-stripping
✔️ Support a balanced scalp environment
✔️ Allow follicles to function without obstruction
That’s it.
⸻
What it does NOT do:
❌ Speed up your hair growth rate
❌ Extend the anagen phase directly
❌ Reverse hormonal or genetic hair loss
❌ Reactivate inactive follicles
⸻
The takeaway:
Shampoo is supportive care, not a treatment for hair growth.
If there’s an underlying issue affecting your hair,
no bottle on a shelf is going to fix that on its own.
⸻
There’s a lot of marketing in this industry.
Very little actual education.
Now you know the difference 🖤
