A new report claiming children are being “overdiagnosed” with mental health issues and that this risks “undercutting grit and resilience” repeats a tired, misleading narrative.

Like recent comments from Bridget Phillipson and Wes Streeting, it shifts focus away from real action - and ignores the fact that too many children still can’t access the support they need.

Summer is over. School is about to start. For some young people, this time of year can be a real challenge.

School anxiety is a common issue and can affect any child at any time. Friendship worries, struggling to keep up with the workload, anxiety relating to the school environment, stress around perfectionism, juggling home and school and a social life, fears of starting a new school, the pressure to do everything... Whatever you are finding hard, I am here for you.

I am a counsellor who specialises in working with teens. I previously worked as a secondary school counsellor, and have hundreds of hours of experience working with young people, particularly those who struggle with school anxiety and avoidance.

Apologies for being almost non-existent here lately. When I'm not with my wonderful clients I've been busy working on my dissertation for my MSc, so social media has had to take a back seat!

Self-care has also been top priority during this busy time, so I've been enjoying my garden, good books and getting my nails done.

I currently have some availability on Tuesday mornings, so get in touch. Therapy is self-care too!

Therapist Confessions 🤫
Your therapist is human, and they are far from perfect!
Plenty of us became therapists because we have suffered.
We have been in the trenches.
We have given up hope.
We have cried ourselves to sleep.
We have felt unloved and unlovable.
We have lost ourselves.
We have had moments of panic, of pure fear, of deep despair.
And we have made it out.
We crawled slowly out of the pit, our own therapist by our side.
We tentatively peeked back out into the world
and when we reached ourselves again, we walked far enough that we could train ourselves up to help others,
to reach down into the pit and pull others out so they can walk alongside us and enjoy life again.
So, yes, we may sometimes seem like we are 'just listening',
but mostly we are feeling it with you.
And we are still fu***ng things up in our own lives, and ignoring our own knowledge, and being just as wonderfully messy as the rest of you.
