Cooler months can impact your skin in several ways due to lower temperatures, reduced humidity and environmental changes.
1. Dryness and Dehydration: Cold air holds less moisture and indoor heating further strips humidity, leading to dry, tight or flaky skin. This can weaken the skin’s moisture barrier, making it less effective at retaining hydration.
2. Increased Sensitivity and Redness: The harsh weather and temperature fluctuations can irritate the skin, causing redness, itchiness, or stinging, especially for those with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema or rosacea.
3. Flakiness and Rough Texture: Lower humidity and cold winds can cause dead skin cells to build up, leading to a rough, uneven texture or peeling, particularly on the face, lips and hands.
4. Breakouts: While oil production may decrease, the stress on the skin’s barrier and overuse of heavy moisturizers can clog pores, potentially triggering acne or exacerbating existing breakouts.
5. Dullness: Reduced cell turnover in colder weather, combined with less exfoliation due to dry skin, can make skin look lackluster and less radiant.
6. Chapping and Cracking: Exposed areas like lips, hands and cheeks are prone to chapping or cracking due to wind exposure and low moisture levels.
