UK charity aims to break world record with the longest friendship bracelet ever made
Looking for something fun, free, and meaningful to do this summer?
Girls Friendly Society (GFS), a UK charity supporting girls and young women, is launching a nationwide campaign to break the world record for the longest friendship bracelet ever made, and they want families everywhere to get involved. It’s a simple way to spark conversation, creativity, and kindness, while being part of something bigger.
Anyone can take part. From today, participants can order a free bracelet pack, braid a segment using the materials provided, and return it by October 31. Each piece will be stitched into one enormous, continuous bracelet - built by thousands of hands from living rooms, schools, and offices across the UK.
But this isn’t just about breaking a record.
“Each braid tells a story, at GFS our girls, volunteers and supporters find a community where they can feel safe to be themselves, the bracelet represents all of those individuals coming together into one diverse but connected chain” says Heather Smith, CEO at GFS.
“Together, they send a powerful message to every girl: you belong.”
Why it matters
GFS has been creating supportive spaces for girls and young women since 1875, offering a place to build confidence, make real friendships, and feel safe being themselves.Today, that mission is more urgent than ever. In a world where one in five girls feels lonely most or all of the time*, GFS offers a much-needed antidote: connection, community, and care.
“Outside GFS, there’s loads of judgement and people rain on your ideas,” said one young participant.
“But it’s brighter inside here - where you can be yourself, be comfortable, and shine.”
The campaign aims to raise awareness of GFS’s work and engage new supporters, while creating a national moment of joyful participation. It is free to join, open to all ages, and designed to be low-waste, low-cost, and high impact.
Packs include ribbon, instructions, and a return envelope - all hand-assembled by GFS volunteers.
