I've just put myself forward for a weight loss case study in a magazine. I took this photo today to illustrate my weight loss. I lost two and a half stone last year, and I've kept it off. These were the trousers I wore on my wedding day in 2023. They don't stay up, and I've only kept them to remind myself how far I've come. I'm not posting this photo to brag, but to say that it's never too late to build a healthy lifestyle or try to lose weight. As a woman in her 50s, I thought my slimmer years were behind me. I'd all but given up. Then I made a few minor changes, and the weight came off. Never give up.

This year, I'm celebrating 30 years of running. When I began running back in 1995, I had no idea I would still be enjoying it three decades later. I didn't think that far ahead. It's a privilege to be still clocking up the miles and enjoying the health and fitness benefits all these years later.

Throwback to 2014 when I was editor of Women's Running Magazine and I got to run with Haile GebreSelassie. Who was naturally much faster than me.

Overheard in the gym today:

'Don't be so lazy! Just do the work.'

I have been known to say that to myself on occasion. But not today.

Sometimes in life you have to take a step back to keep making progress. A knee ni**le earlier this week due to more mileage has meant I've had to take a few days off and ease back on the distance. After knee surgery in 2011, I still feel hugely privileged to be able to run, so I have no qualms about easing back. I know it sounds cheesy, but every single run is a gift - not to be taken for granted.

So easing back a bit to be able to continue running is well worth it.

I’m so proud of this top with last year’s mileage on it that I can’t bring myself to wear it! I might just hang it up as a souvenir of my running in 2024 rather than sweating! Thank you to the team at Race At Your Pace for this fantastic idea! If you don't know about Race At Your Pace, I highly recommend visiting the website to find out more about its monthly challenges for runners, walkers, cyclists, swimmers – anyone who wants to be more active regardless of your current fitness level. You choose the monthly mileage you want to reach and you fit it in around your schedule.

A bit about me…

I love cardio and endurance training, as well as weights and boxing fitness. I’m the former Editor of Women’s Fitness and Women’s Running, author of the book ‘Run Yourself Fit’ and ‘The World Marathon Book’. I’ve run two marathons and 12 half marathons. I also manage my partner Dave’s career - he’s a Roy Orbison tribute artist - so amid the workouts I juggle late nights and the occasional bout of junk food at motorway service stations on the way back from gigs! It’s a busy life!
