🤔 Ever wonder how pole dancers pull off those jaw-dropping flexibility tricks, even in the middle of a fast-paced routine?

💪 The secret isn't just raw talent—it's consistent, targeted flexibility training. Yes, they work hard, but, their secret is that during their routines they aren't pushing to their absolute maximum. So, that spatchcock you see, or that perfectly flat rainbow, well, those performers can probably bend more than what they do on stage.

🍋 During their performances they are instead operating within a comfortable, controlled range of motion, making those advanced moves look effortless.

💛This balance of strength and flexibility is what allows them to flow seamlessly from one trick to the next.

Being a great pole dancer doesn't require the ability to perform inversions (hanging upside down or performing moves while inverted) because pole dancing is a highly versatile art form that emphasizes more than just strength and acrobatic skills.

Pole dancing is rooted in dance, so having smooth transitions, musicality, and expressive movement are just as important as tricks. Mastery of flow and fluidity can make performances captivating without needing to go upside down.

You can showcase incredible strength and body control through grounded moves, spins, and climbs. These require significant muscular engagement, balance, and precision, which are impressive on their own.

Not every dancer is comfortable or physically able to invert due to body type, flexibility, or injury. However, this doesn’t limit their ability to excel in other aspects of pole dancing, such as flexibility, floor work, or choreographed sequences.

✨ If someone injures themselves, do not move them ✨

🍋 In moments of crisis, the instinct to rush to the aid of an injured person is deeply ingrained in our psyche. However, there are critical considerations to keep in mind before attempting to move someone who has been injured. While the impulse to assist is noble, moving an injured individual immediately after an accident or injury can exacerbate their condition and potentially lead to further harm.

🍋 In the immediate aftermath of an accident or injury, the extent of the damage may not be immediately apparent. The individual may insist they are fine. This is because of adrenaline. People can run on broken legs without noticing because adrenalin masks pain.

🍋 The answer is C.
✨ Ensure the individual stays completely still
✨If you are appropriately trained then stabilise the head/neck using manual inline stabilisation (MILS). You do not need any form of medical degree to be able to be able to do this but you need to have undergone specialist training before attempting.
✨Shout for medical assistance (ideally this should be from the trauma specific first aider on site - see previous post on the difference between first aiders and a trauma first aider).
✨ The trauma specific first aider will then complete an assessment and create an action plan i.e. call for an ambulance/ concussion screen.

🍋Moving an injured individual without proper assessment can worsen their condition and lead to further injury. For instance, if the individual has sustained a spinal injury, any movement could potentially cause irreversible damage to the spinal cord, resulting in paralysis or even death. By avoiding unnecessary movement, we can minimise the risk of exacerbating existing injuries and prevent additional harm.

🍋 Any question. Just ask!

🍋 You guys went wild for my last post. I want to know what you want to know!

After the traumatic events at the weekend and conversations with .pole there's big chat and here's my take on what needs to be done at improving health and safety at our comps.

✨ Having appropriately skilled medical staff with trauma specific first aid training ✨

In the dynamic and high-stakes world of pole and circus arts where athletes push their bodies to the limit, injuries are an inevitable part of the game. While many injuries are minor and easily treated, others can be severe and even life-threatening. This is where trauma first aid responders come into play. These highly trained professionals are essential in ensuring the immediate care and safety of athletes, potentially making the difference between full recovery and long-term consequences.

Trauma first aid training goes beyond basic first aid techniques. It focuses on equipping individuals with the necessary skills to assess, stabilize, and manage traumatic injuries until professional medical help arrives.

Trauma first aiders have the skills to assess and manage:
🍋 Fracture management/ immobilisation and splinting
🍋 Spinal injury assessment
🍋 Concussion screening and head injuries
🍋 Management of airways and breathing
🍋 CPR and defib usage
🍋 Reassurance and psychological support
🍋 Addressing shock

In the last year we've had an heart related death and 2 fallen poles which THANK THE LORD didn't sustain further injury, but what if they did.

Consider how your competition manage if a competitor sustained an open fracture? How would your competition manage someone falling and landed on their head and requiring spinal stabilisation? How would your competition manage if someone went into cardiac arrest?

posted yesterday about how Blaxckstage have a welfare member of staff for BOTH spectators and performers. They ensures noone is being bullied and harassed or has any issues and are trained in de-escalation security and harm reduction.

Part 2.

Why is heels anatomy important?? If you're serious about slaying those pirouettes and conquering transitions, then delving into the world of heels anatomy and technique is an absolute game-changer! Here's why:

🍋 Stability and Control - knowing the ins and outs of heels anatomy allows you to select the perfect pair that offers stability and support, enhancing your balance and control during those gravity defying spins (see previous post to learn about how your top piece can enhance stability and control)

🍋 Injury Prevention - pole dancing puts unique demands on your feet both in and out of heels. By learning about heels structure you can choose shoes that increase your ankle control, reducing the risk of injury without having to sacrifice style

🍋 Flexibility and Performance - the right pair of heels can enhance your flexibility and amplify your performance on the pole. Understanding how different heel heights and shapes affect your body mechanics empowers you to make informed choices for maximum agility and flair!

So whether you're a seasoned pole dancing or or just starting your journey, remember mastering heels anatomy and technique is your secret weapon to unlocking your full potential!

🍋Compression strength is a fundamental skill for any aerialist or handbalancer but often not a skill trained in isolation. It's rarely spoken about and wildly underutilised.

🍋Vote in our poll below for whether you'd like to see drills for aerialists or handstands or both on how you can improve your compression strength.

🍋Do you have any questions? Pop them in the chat or slide into my DMs. Often if you have a question, others do too.
