Do you know someone who uses a BVM like this?

You may have seen it the bag completely emptied, way more air than the patient actually needs, lungs getting overinflated instead of gently ventilated.

The thing is, good ventilation isn’t about how much air you can push in… it’s about how little you need to. Just enough to see a nice, controlled chest rise. That’s it.

When we overdo it, we’re not helping, we’re increasing pressure in the chest, making it harder for blood to circulate effectively, and potentially doing more harm than good.

It’s one of those skills that looks simple, but often isn't. Done well, it’s an art.

Slow it down. Ease off the squeeze. Let the lungs do their thing.

One question we're frequently asked about our response bags is: “What about oxygen?”

In high-risk or unstable environments, carrying supplementary oxygen introduces added risk, it’s a combustible gas in an area of vulnerability. At the same time, the potential benefit for most patients is limited:

🚨Evidence shows that giving high levels of oxygen to trauma patients without hypoxia doesn’t clearly improve outcomes.

🚨Periods of hyperoxia (excess oxygen) have even been associated with higher mortality in critically injured patients.

🚨Observational data also suggests that many trauma patients don’t initially need oxygen, yet it’s often given as a default.

That’s why our Medical Response Bags use a Pocket BVM designed to work with or without supplementary oxygen. If oxygen is appropriate, it can easily be connected using the tubing from the included adult oxygen mask, giving flexibility without compromising safety.

Proud to have supported at their newly launched ACE Competition.

We were on hand for the medical simulation, where teams raced against the clock to safely access and treat a patient in a confined space environment. High pressure, real scenarios, and no room for mistakes, exactly the kind of challenge we love to be part of.

For the event, we deployed our fully kitted W1 Response Bag, complete with live equipment, giving competitors a realistic, hands-on experience of managing a casualty in a demanding setting. It was great to see our kit put through its paces and perform when it mattered most.

Massive credit to everyone who took part, the standard was seriously impressive!

Already looking forward to next year’s ACE Challenge

I’ve historically been a C. You don’t use shears nearly as much as you think, or at least I didn’t, so I never cared… until people started having very strong opinions.
