🥛 Nourishing Your Milk Supply: Foods & Techniques for Breastfeeding Parents

Breastmilk is an incredible food — it adapts to your baby’s needs, contains antibodies, and is perfectly tailored just for them. While milk supply is mostly influenced by feeding frequency and effective milk removal, some foods and techniques can help support your breastfeeding journey.

🌱 Foods That May Support Milk Supply

(Always check with your healthcare provider before adding supplements or making big diet changes — every parent’s body is unique.)
• Oats
• Leafy Greens
• Nuts & Seeds
• Hydration

🍼 Techniques to Support & Maintain Supply
• Feed Frequently – Breastmilk works on a supply-and-demand system. Feeding often (including at night) signals your body to make more.
• Ensure a Good Latch – An effective latch means better milk removal, which supports supply.
• Pumping Between Feeds – Especially useful if you want to build a freezer stash or maintain supply when away from baby.
• Power Pumping – Mimics cluster feeding to boost supply: pump for 20 minutes, rest 10, pump 10, rest 10, pump 10.
• Skin-to-Skin Contact – Encourages your milk-making hormones and helps your baby feed more effectively.
• Switch Nursing – Alternate breasts several times during a feed to encourage more stimulation and milk removal.

💛 Doula Support for Your Breastfeeding Journey
As a postnatal doula, I offer hands-on guidance with breastfeeding, pumping techniques, and understanding your body’s signals. I can help you:
• Learn comfortable feeding positions
• Navigate early feeding challenges
• Create a pumping plan that works for your lifestyle

💨 The Gentle Art of Burping Your Baby

In the early weeks, feeding is a big part of your baby’s day — and sometimes, so is getting those little bubbles out! Burping isn’t just about comfort; it can help prevent fussiness, reduce spit-up, and make feeding more pleasant for both of you.

🌱 Why Babies Need Burping
When your baby feeds, they may swallow air along with milk. That air can get trapped in their tummy, making them uncomfortable. Burping helps release it so they can settle and feed more happily.

🕒 When to Burp
• During the feed – Especially if baby seems fussy or pulls off the bottle.
• After the feed – To clear any last bubbles before they rest.

🤲 Gentle Burping Positions
1. Over the Shoulder – Hold baby upright against your chest with their chin resting on your shoulder. Support the head and gently pat or rub their back.
2. Sitting on Your Lap – Sit baby on your knee, supporting their chest and head with one hand while gently patting their back.
3. Lying Across Your Lap – Place baby tummy-down across your legs, supporting their head slightly higher than their chest, and rub or pat gently.

💡 Doula Tips for Success
• Use a soft touch — burping should be gentle, not forceful.
• Pat or rub upward to help air bubbles rise.
• Some babies burp in seconds, others need a few minutes — both are normal.
• If no burp comes after a few minutes and baby is comfortable, it’s okay to move on.

Every baby is different. Some need burping after every feed, others rarely do — learning your little one’s cues will guide you.

✨ Why Building a Routine with Your Newborn Matters

Those early newborn days can feel like a beautiful blur — feedings, diaper changes, and snuggles blending together. While flexibility is key (babies love to keep us guessing!), creating gentle routines can make life calmer for you and your little one.

🌱 Why Routines Help
• Security & Comfort – Babies feel safe when they can predict what’s coming next. A simple pattern of feed–play–sleep helps them learn the world is reliable.
• Better Sleep – Consistent cues, like dimming the lights or soft lullabies before naps, signal to your baby it’s time to rest.
• Easier Communication – Over time, you’ll recognize your baby’s patterns and needs more quickly — and they’ll understand your cues too.
• Confidence for Parents – A loose routine helps you feel more in control and reduces stress in the day-to-day.

💡 Tips for Creating a Newborn Routine
1. Follow Baby’s Lead – In the first weeks, focus on observing natural rhythms rather than enforcing a strict schedule.
2. Anchor with Small Rituals – A bath at the same time each evening or a morning cuddle in the same chair helps establish predictability.
3. Keep it Gentle & Flexible – Growth spurts, teething, and leaps will shift routines — that’s normal.
4. Include Yourself – Build in moments for your own rest, hydration, and nourishment. A cared-for parent is the best routine of all.

Remember — it’s not about perfection. A newborn routine is less about “clock watching” and more about creating a rhythm that supports connection, trust, and calm for the whole family.

💛 You and your baby are learning together. Be patient with yourself — you’re doing beautifully

🤱 Thinking about co- sleeping with your newborn?
You’re not alone—and as a doula, I know how important it is to offer realistic, non-judgmental support to tired parents navigating nighttime with a new baby.

Bed sharing can be a beautiful and beneficial to bonding and development … when done safely. Here’s how to reduce risks:

✨ Safe Bed Sharing:

1️⃣ Non-smoker & sober – Both parents must be smoke-free and not using alcohol, drugs or medication that can cause drowsiness
2️⃣ falling- make sure your baby cannot full out of bed or become trapped between parents and the mattress and wall.
3️⃣Healthy, full-term baby – it is not recommended to co sleep if your baby was prematurity or has a low birth weight.
4️⃣ Back to sleep – Always place baby on their back.
5️⃣ Safe surface – Firm mattress, keep soft bedding, pillows, and blankets away from baby
6️⃣ others in the bed – don’t let any other children or pets in the bed at the same time.

🛏️ NEVER bed share on a sofa, armchair, or with loose blankets or duvets.

📥 Save this for those long nights—or share with a friend who’s preparing for postpartum life.

If you’re unsure about what’s right for your family, I’m always happy to talk it through. There’s no one-size-fits-all, only what feels safe, informed, and supported for you.

The lullabytrust is also great for co- sleeping advice !

Let’s Talk About Cluster Feeding

If your baby wants to nurse nonstop some days and you’re wondering what is going on?! — you’re likely in the middle of cluster feeding.

Here’s what you need to know:

🌙 What is cluster feeding?
It’s when your baby feeds frequently in short bursts, often during the evening hours. It can feel like they’re “snacking” or “never full.”

🌀 Why does it happen?
• Growth spurts (hello, brain and body development!)
• Regulating or increasing milk supply
• Comfort and closeness during fussy times

📅 Common ages:
Cluster feeding usually shows up around 2–3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months — but every baby is different.

✨ What to remember:
• It’s normal
• It’s temporary
• It doesn’t mean you’re not producing enough milk
• You’re not doing anything wrong

🧘‍♀️ Tips for surviving cluster feeding:
✔️ Set up a cozy feeding station
✔️ Stay hydrated & snack yourself
✔️ Let chores wait
✔️ Ask your village for support
✔️ Binge a show, listen to audiobooks, rest when you can

🌼 You’ve got this.

🤱 Feeding Your Baby: You Have Options 💛

Whether you’re just starting your journey or deep in the feeding trenches, here’s a gentle reminder: there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to feeding your baby.

Here are the most common feeding options, all valid and beautiful in their own way:

🍼 Types of Baby Feeding:

👶 1. Breastfeeding
Natural, nourishing, and full of bonding. Some parents breastfeed exclusively, others combo feed. Support matters.

🍼 2. Formula Feeding
Modern formulas are safe, nutritious, and can be life-saving. Great for families who choose not to or cannot breastfeed.

🍶 3. Combination Feeding (Mixed Feeding)
A flexible mix of breast milk and formula. Works well for many families.

🥄 4. Expressed Milk (Pumping)
Feeding breast milk via bottle. Helps share the feeding load or support parents returning to work.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re not alone — support is here. As a doula, I offer non-judgmental, evidence-based guidance to help you navigate YOUR feeding journey.
