Why I decided to become a Foot Health Practitioner
I started working as a full time Care Assistant pretty much straight from school. I worked in Nursing homes and Domiciliary and it wasn't until then that I realised how important it is to look after our feet especially as we get older. Our feet are extremely hard working and carry us around all our lives, yet they are often forgotten about and taken for granted.
I worked my way through different posts within the health care profession, reaching Area Manager which involved a lot of working within an office. However I am not one to be static and did not enjoy this role and the stresses that came with it, so I took the decision to get back out into the community. At first I was unsure what to do so returned as a Care Assistant. Many of the clients I visited would ask if I could cut their toenails or fingernails for them but as a carer I was not insured to help.
I loved being able to help people with daily tasks and support them in their lives but I felt something was missing and I had a thirst to learn something new. I knew I wanted to stay working with people in the community but how? One morning on my way to a clients house an advert came on for a Diploma as a Foot Health Practitioner at the SMAE Institute. I went home that evening and googled it (good old google) and before I knew it I was signed up and couldn't wait to start.
I have always enjoyed working with people, trying to improve their day one way or another so this is the perfect job for me. I get to work for myself so my time is flexible, it also gives me a drive to better my skills and learning. Every client is different as is every day, knowing I have helped someone with a painful corn or a simple nail cut, or even knowing a client who is housebound or isolated has seen someone that day.
