We celebrated Penguin Day …….. where the children helped organise our penguin Tuff Tray with real ice, cracking bath salts, icebergs and blue water, creating lots of curiosity and sensory discovery.
They also enjoyed our new shop role-play area, practised counting with the beads/abacus, and built mine craft world designs using magnetic building cubes.

We also looked at the water cycle and placed gauges outside to measure rainfall

We shared the story “Blue Penguin” and watched a National Geographic Kids penguin programme, sparking lots of wonderful questions and conversation! 🐧

Over the past couple of weeks, the children have been immersed in rich, seasonal changing experiences. We explored Autumn into Winter through sensory tuff trays, winter story invitation tuff trays and creative crafts including poppy art and autumn colour stamping. The children investigated nature, colours and textures, and experimented with science using our digital microscope—learning how to handle slides, focus lenses and observe tiny details.
Through play like weighing/ balancing acorns etc and counting using hands on visuals, they developed early STEM thinking, fine motor skills, creativity, imagination, early literacy and numeracy. We also spoke about hibernation and migration as we seen more geese fly past. A wonderful few weeks of discovery, magic and child-led exploration.

Some enjoyable outings to aquarium , beaches, woods land and parks provided rich experiences and rich autumn colours , supporting early STEM understanding, creativity, motor development, and sensory exploration. This helped the children connect with the changes of autumn and the natural world around them. The woodland floors were full of seasonal treasures which we used for counting and learning about hibernation. Tuff trays included Potion making, ice, homemade dough, water painting, woodland treasures and messy play 🍂🍁 🐠 🦞 🍂 💧 🧊🍄🐚🍊

A variety of autumn-inspired activities, from sensory play trays filled with foam, pinecones, leaves and seasonal treasures, to story-based provocations with books like Owl Babies and The Little acorn . The children explored creative learning through painting, craft, and colour mixing, while also engaging in science and environmental themes such as food chains, digestion, and “Save Our Planet” activities. We observed a beautiful rainbow 🌈 in between showers. Outdoor play and time in the polytunnel gave the children hands-on experiences with nature observing pumpkins, cucumbers, and other seasonal produce.

We’ve had a busy time with lots of creativity, exploration, and learning. The children enjoyed making Woodland scenes and animal masks using autumn 🍂 colours, painting with leaves and natural treasures we find…. exploring textures through sensory play. These activities support creativity, fine motor skills, and early mark-making as they experimented with colours, shapes, and patterns.

Outdoors, we’ve been noticing the changes in the season, collecting natural treasures and using them for program be learning beyond the initial find. Trips to the polytunnel and a farm shop gave children the chance to see seasonal crops.

Autumn 🍂 is a wonderful season for learning.

🍂 August 🍂 so far…

The children have enjoyed a wide variety of activities, both indoors and outdoors, supporting their learning and development across all areas of the early years curriculum.
Fossil hunters – digging, brushing, and exploring.
The solar system, weather, bugs, and bees …. early science.
Created summer/ autumn wreaths.
Shared role play, building games, puzzles, and mark-making – supporting communication, and social skills between age groups.
Sand play, balance and outdoor exploration – building strength, confidence, and risk awareness.
Watched combines and balers at work in local fields – connecting children with their local environments

Active August 😊…. the week before schools go back.. ❤️
The children both old and new starts have been busy experiencing the world in so many hand on ways. All have been so settled and the older children so welcoming I am so proud of them.

Aquarium and beach adventures where they explored and developed early science skills, and experiencing our local environments.

Giant tomatoes and using trugs to harvest of cucumbers and other produce , the children are building knowledge of healthy eating, sustainability and the seasons. We also watched the local farmer cut and make the hay bales.
Nature collages, role play, and messy water fun, the microscopic world were included for early STEM experiences.
Learning stations were set up ….. play with tills, balancing games, and number puzzles, symmetry… the children built confidence in early maths, literacy, and social skills.
