859sqn cadets and staff headed to Otterburn for the Wing’s adventure camp, where they took part in a packed programme of challenging and rewarding activities. Set in the rugged Northumberland countryside, the camp offered a mix of physical and mental challenges designed to build confidence, teamwork, and resilience. ⛵ Gold DofE Sailing Expedition -
Cadets Complete Challenging and Rewarding Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Sailing Expedition
Cadets and staff have successfully returned from an unforgettable Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award sailing expedition along the breathtaking West Coast of Scotland. The voyage proved to be both challenging and immensely rewarding, pushing participants out of their comfort zones as they took on leadership responsibilities and developed vital skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and navigation.
The journey began in Oban, where cadets learned the fundamentals of sailing. From there, the crew sailed to Tobermory, around the Isle of Mull, and through the Inner Sound of the Hebrides. Navigating around the formidable Cape Wrath, they continued up to Orkney, before embarking on a two-day open sea crossing of the North Sea, ultimately arriving in Aberdeen Harbour.
Throughout the expedition, cadets seized every opportunity to learn, grow, and experience the natural world—spotting a diverse array of marine wildlife along the way. By the end of the voyage, their hard work and perseverance were rewarded with a great sense of achievement. Not only did they complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, but they also earned the prestigious RYA Competent Crew Award.
This remarkable journey will undoubtedly leave lasting memories and skills that cadets will carry with them for life.
🪖 On Squadron -
On squadron, cadets have been progressing through their Blue Fieldcraft, preparing to advance to the Bronze level by developing essential field skills. In addition to their training, cadets have been engaging in a variety of other activities, including model-making projects and planning a fundraising initiative to help support the purchase of new equipment for the squadron. Their dedication and teamwork continue to shine through in all aspects of squadron life.
What a few weeks it’s been – well done to all involved! We’re proud of everything our cadets have achieved, and we’re looking forward to what’s next!
